Hello all,
July's meeting is going to be held on Monday 5th July 2010 at Navaho.
The subject of the meeting is "I've got a Linux Question/Problem, can you
help?"
Due to the nature of the meeting, if people are wanting to attend and have
questions etc, if possible can you send the query up to the mailing list
before hand so people can have a think about, so there maybe a better
chance you get your query answered.
Also, when I send the "Who's going" email out, can people try and reply to
this so we know the numbers.

able to solve it.
Though from personal experience with the same controller, I'll push you
away from using it. Fine when it works, bad when it goes wrong!

Cheers Tom. Interesting! Was toying with the option of sw raid with my two
1tg drives. (I had to flash the firmware for the controller with someone's
hack just to get the controller to acknowledge their existence!)

I haven't tried it with 1TB disks yet, but certainly 500GB models worked
out of the box.
After the array degraded (one of the disks seems to have had a PCB
failure) and I purchased a new disk, I was unable to rebuild from the
remaining good disk with either the BIOS, any form of Linux tool (dmraid
has limited support for controller rebuild functions - mostly limited to
Intel controllers) or indeed with Windows 7.
So I think until I can justify a nice hardware RAID controller, I'll be
sticking with mdraid. I had some fun making that work, but it wasn't
really mdraid's fault (my ignorance of UUIDs) but it's working just fine
now doing the same job - mirroring my disks - as the fakeRAID controller
was with dmraid. :)
By all means, get it working - it's an interesting experience.
Particularly if you wish to dual boot with Windows, booting from the
same array. But from a long-term dmraid perspective, it's a nightmare if
it goes wrong.

It's for a samba / squid etc home gateway box so it's reliability I want,
I'll stear clear of the SI hw raid!

Hi,
Here are some possible subjects for the next and subsequent meeting(s). I
am relatively new in the Linux camp but I have installed and played around
with loads of different distros. In every case, however, I consistently get
one or two hw devices that simply wont work. Suse and Ubuntu seem to be the
best whereby Ubuntu succeeds even more often than Suse. On the other hand I
like Suse better than Ubuntu.
I have read a lot of online how tos but most of the time I don't understand
the terminology because most of these documents assume that the reader
already knows a lot of this stuff. Worst of all, most of the time the
instructions will contain references to files/utilities/locations which do
not exist on my current system as every distro is different. But even if I
get a fix from the Suse website for a Suse problem, more often than not the
fix wont work. Something is almost always missing despite the fact that I
follow the instructions to the letter.
So, I (and maybe a few others) could really do with some guidance on how
to:
1) trouble shoot hardware issues
how to establish if a device has been detected
how to confirm that a driver has been installed
how to get the drivers version/type etc.
AND how to change/install a different one.
This should include compiling drivers from source code.
2) Compiling Source Code. I constantly get errors of something
missing.
How to read/interpret the compiler log and find the missing modules
etc.
3) Fixing X-Windows problems such as when it wont start due to an
incorrect resolution setting, refresh rates etc.
That is enough for now but I can come up with loads more if need be :-)
