I'd like to get a box running an internet gateway and file server. A nas &
i-scsi target with 'net proxy and content filtering.
If I bring the hardware along does someone have some expertise in that area
or just think they can busk it!

I've used it for ages but the latest two versions don't like my hardware :-(
FreeBSD's fault.
I'm looking at OpenFiler at the mo which does install but does not handle
the internet gateway stuff out-of-the-box.
Also downloaded Zentyal (nee eBox) and Untangle to try. Open to the idea of
a roll-your-own solution with Ubuntu server.

Sorry for the late response, but have been away from my computer and an
internet connection!
The topic, well there is the possibility of a mixed bag of *maybe*
something on virtualization and a look over anyone's installs of Ubunutu
10.10. Also (which would fit nicely with Chris' question) and member of
the group who has a question, and we can all have a sit and see what we
can work out.

It's a roll-your-own based on Ubuntu. It doesn't do everything that you
are after, but it does operate as an internet gateway with DHCP server
and DNS forwarding and as a NAS with Samba.
I've also got an eeepc that operates as a gateway and wireless AP and
uses a 3G dongle as the uplink.
I'll bring the eeepc with me tomorrow and a copy of all the config files
off the other one.
