Does anyone have any recomendations for ocr type software for Linux It's
something I've never really had to do under linux before but I have a few
scanned documents in a .jpg format I could do with editing.

Not something I have done much of in any OS to be honest. I've just
had to set up Vue Scan in ahem... Win 7 because my Canon LiDE 50 is
not supported :( Yes, if you look around the web it's supposed to be.
So tell my scanner that then! It does of course work fine with Linux
so I shall be interested to find out about OCR software too.

Have a look at tesseract. It has yielded fairly good results for me.

Just managed to get it installed and working and Kris your suggestion was
superb. I'm running manjaro at the minute but it was in the arch repos. so
have a look in the repos of whatever distro your using I think the package
I installed us called gimagereader
I had to download some additional language files from here:
http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/downloads/list
It worked pretty much 99% with only a few characters missing or slightly
out of place.
So there you go OCR for linux :)

Hi: Using Debian, I found I had several OCR Packages. They're probably on DVD
#2 still. I tried them on a big PDF file with illustrations. "Tesseract" was
best, but the result would still need manual editing with a Spelling Checker.
"gocr" and "ocrad" were available too. Note that with all these you
only get
the text. The illustrations were nowhere to be seen.

I Just found out that none of them seem to do illustrations but that was
fine I just wanted the text from them. I was really suprised by how easy it
was to get this to work and was expecting for some major headache.
