Hi,
I am trying to create a cd iso image from a dvd as my laptop only has
cdrom. when i try to do this from the dvd in my Mandriva 2006 PC. I
get a message saying that md5sum is not installed. i have searched the
hard drive and software but no sign of it.
How and where can i get it? All info must be idiot-proof please!

The Md5 sum is purely a way of the software checking itself. It's a
mathematical way of making sure everything is as it hsould be and has
not been tampered with. If you can continue without it then carry on.
If it is causing a show stopping problem then I have to hand it over
to higher experts...which means pretty much anybody :-))))

Kev,
It's a big problem, can't create the image to burn to cd. Distro came
with a mag and the instructions assume you already know it all.
I'm rapidly getting sick of the perpetual problems here. Have you got
a copy of Win 3.1? I might be able to manage that.

am not a user of md5sum myself but I guess the wiki should be a good
starting place. Let me know how you get on! If I get the chance I could
take a look, I am a Unix SA myself but if I can't help then I might be
able to put it to a couple of the Linux SA's where I work.

However, I can hopefully point you in the right direction :-) Try
going onto the magazine's website and onto the forums. You should be
able to get somebody who knows about the problem on there.
Is it Linux Format magazine? They've got PC Linux on their cover disk
(well, internal now) this month. Mine's just come in the post. If it
is then the forums are excellent. If it isn't then you could always
still try them as they are very good.

Stuart on your root terminal type
md5sum
does this do anything? if so then md5sum utility is installed and the
cd's installer source (auto run so to speak) is just buggered in all
honesty, if not, use the mandriva (i think you use, right?)
update/package manager to install md5.

configure a wifi pcmcia it says it can't find the ndiswrapper
interface.

From your output below it looks like md5sum was executed as you have
the
an error reported by md5sum.
It looks like md5sum is complaining about not being able to see the file
pcl.iso. Also there is a permissions problem with somthing the script is
trying to call. Not sure what is going on with that bit to be honest as
you have run the script as root, unless it needs to have write permissions
which of course you won't have on a cdrom.
If use the type command it should confirm if you have the md5sum binary in
your path - try `type md5sum` if found you should see something like
'md5sum is hashed /usr/sbin/md5sum' if not it will say not found.
