Hi All,
I was just wondering how many of you had noticed/been affected by the
blocking of thepiratebay.se by o2, Talk Talk, Virgin, Be, and BT?
As an IT professional, it's helpful to be able to get various ISOs off
there for customers who've lost disks and so on... and I've probably used
it like a DVR in the past... so I'll admit I'm an occasional user! :) but
whether the site is used for good or bad - I still think it's very wrong
that ISPs are just preventing access to it. Obviously their 'block' is not
hard to circumvent.
On another note, I do think it's hilarious that from all the publicity
surrounding it, TPB has had 12 million more users this week than it's ever
had before (even for a top 100 site - that's one hell of a step).
So yeah, just hoping to get everybody's thoughts on the situation really...
Please try to keep it civil though.. I know how fiery some of our members
are! :P

Well, I am affected, sort of. My ISP is O2 but I don't ever use
Pirate Bay. No honestly I have never downloaded a torrent file. I
did look at it once for a legal download of SuSE. I gave up and got
it the normal html way if I recall correctly. However, despite this I
am disgusted that O2 and others have placed a block on the site. I
just wonder what is next in their sights? I do not know how I would
get around this block by the way either...

Most of these ISPs are obeying court orders. They have no choice but
to obey it. A few of them gave quite vigorous defence in court in an
attempt to avoid having to do this, so rather than complaining about
the ISPs it is better to complain about and to the government.

I suppose it is the Government that I'm angry at... its a bit like shoot
the messenger!
To anyone who doesn't know how to get round it... it can be as simple as
changing your DNS servers to Google/OpenDNS... or you might want to try a
web proxy or vpn like btguard. Might not be relevant now but I personally
fear that if they get away with blocking one website, they'll get
comfortable doing it.

My thoughts are pretty much the same as Adam's: that it's a "thin end of
the wedge" type of thing. I suspect the next move from the entertainment
industry will be to complain that court orders take too long and that
they should be able to get things blocked on their say-so alone.
The blocks are easy to circumvent because ISPs are doing the minimum
required to comply with the court order. Blocking sites is not in their
interest: It costs them money and if it puts people of downloading they
will sell less high speed broadband connections.
Andy is correct: complaints should be directed at the politicians.

hmm, I have read in tonight's paper (Express & Star) that the ISP's
are going to have to monitor traffic to known file sharing sites.
This was not expanded upon so I don't know if they mean torrent sites
or some of the web sites with links to sharing servers. Quite how
they would do this is another matter as I suspect the numbers would be
quite high. Not too high for computer monitoring but perhaps too high
for human intervention. So they may well go for the high end users,
to start with. Then the proposal is you get three strikes and after
that the 'entertainment industry' is allowed to request your personal
details and they can have a day or two in court with you :(

anything naughty. Actually I do grab the odd tv show that I have
missed but I bet they wouldn't give a damn about that despite the fact

That's all fairly close to my logic too.
Once upon a time the ISPs used to have the defence that they only supply the pipes, it
would be like asking the highways agency to stop people transporting stolen goods. Not
sure what happened to that theory but it seems to have gone out of the window.
The other issue that seems to be being missed by "them" is that, as Kevan said,
I could have recorded Game of thrones on my sky+ box, I didn't as I only found out
about it late and therefore I _may_ have downloaded it. This seems like a very fine
distinction, it's something I could have, I just got it via another means.

This sounds like the Digital Economy Act.
It doesn't include any burden of compelling the ISPs to do
monitoring. It just includes the ability for rights owners to send
infringement notices to your ISP based on *their* detection of you
distributing stuff illegally.
Only ISPs with more than 400,000 subscribers will be affected by
this, which equates to the largest 6 ISPs in the UK. This actually
catches almost 94% of UK Internet users.
If you don't like the sound of it, my best recommendation would be to
write a letter to your MP. Also if you are a customer of one of the
6 largest ISPs in the UK you should move to a smaller one.

O2 (presumably also Be Unlimited)
Sky
Virgin
TalkTalk
Everything Everywhere
On the other hand if you really did read something about the ISPs
themselves being compelled to monitor their users, then that is more
like the draft Communications Data Bill, which is not yet law.
Everyone should write to their MP about that one; it's terrifying.

Be Unlimited are also affected by o2's implementation on the ban.
o2's ban is done at the IP level rather than using DNS, though it's just as
trivial to circumvent. TPB have/will be changing IP addresses which will
immediately circumvent it. They've also started publishing IPv6 DNS records
which are completely unaffected by the blocking (as it stands now).
