Hi All
Some of you may know (OK Kevan knows) I create and sell websites some are
standard HTML usually created in Front Page or Joomla. I have no PHP skills
and would probably struggle to create one with just a text editor.
Recently I've been doing a heck of a lot of Googling and a good 80% of the
sites I've looked at are appalling not necessarily in functionality but the
presentation makes me want to slap the owner for offending my eyes. True my
choice of colour scheme may not be to everyone's taste but at least I don't
use, for example, yellow fonts on a white background! How the hell are you
supposed to read that?
The latest trend seems to be *Black*, OK not my personal favourite but I
suppose it can look cool if you are a Goth or something, do they use white
fonts? na, course not, no lets have a transparent overlay with mauve fonts
and a black background made up of ghosted images, lovely. Then of course
there's text with an image as the background, do we check that everything
is positioned correct and that everything fits? Nope, "So the text spews
over that pink border on my image, I like the picture and anyway I know what
it says".
My other pet hate is those stupid web effects for example the *Slider*
effect where a box of text or an image stays in view whether you scroll up
or down and of course the bumble bee that follows your pointer, its pretty
cute for about 30 seconds then begins to tick you off and don't talk to me
about background music. I was on some amoeba's website which treated me to
Whitesnake or similar on a continual loop with some of the other pet hates
of mine, towards the bottom of the page the guy stated he was looking for
*Web Creation Work!!*, make your own mind up as to what I was thinking.
So after venting my spleen with all of the above I was wondering what your
pet hates for websites are?

Arch Linux is an independent i686-optimized community distribution for
intermediate and advanced Linux users. Utilising a Rolling Release System
packages are regularly updated and an ISO release is just a snapshot to the
stable packages at that time. So there's no need for a fresh install the
command 'pacman –Syu' upgrades the whole system.

I think we can all agree that music on auto play is hateful. Sites that
force you to use plug-ins to use them also are irritating.
My ultimate, pet hate for websites, is flash. WHAT kind of *!*IDIOT!*!
decided it would be a good idea to make a website that it takes 10
minutes to get past some crappy flash intro without an option to skip
it...then followed by a whole host of animations and transitions that
take 20 seconds to change between pages...and then...the mother of all
irritations. Because they setup some internally handled nav system it
means that the back button on my browser takes me OUT of the site and
back to their bloody flash intro as opposed to the last page I looked at
within their site. It /must/ be some God awful attempt to punish me for
something I've not done yet...possibly the "designer" of that site's
impending slaughter.

intermediate and advanced Linux users. Utilising a Rolling Release
System packages are regularly updated and an ISO release is just a
snapshot to the stable packages at that time. So there's no need for a

not to check for CSS/HTML code would be considerd a exploit, but
MySpace instead embrace it and call it a "Feature". Facebook has
sucesseed where MySpace has failed in terms of design.

sitting down with Netscape Composer and uploading my un-W3C'd websites
to angelfire/geocities. However that was 7 years ago, and the web has
moved on. But its a process I think all designers go through when
first using HTML, once you've worked out how HTML allows elements to
be coloured and positioned you can then make the transition into CSS.
Atm I can write HTML and CSS to W3C standard and even write PHP
scripts and setup MySQL databases to link to it. However my PHP
coding probabily isn't even written efficient enough that would make
it usable by the hundreds. But its a learning process.
Its interesting though to see so many major companies on the internet
not using W3C compliance infavour of competant web design. For example
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=www.amazon.co.uk 1,160 errors on
the page!! W3C and web design should go hand-in-hand, some of my
personal favourite designs on the internet are open source projects.
Examples like www.jokosher.org www.joomla.com www.scribus.net.

sitting in front of computers. There are some websites that have unusable
searches, navigation that changes depending on what page you are on, and the
worst of all, websites that are entirely made of images, held together by
tables and shoved on the internet with a server running windows xp. What the

See this could bring the whole thread swinging back round to advocacy of
FOSS. I don't understand why so many people want to use proprietary
software with the horrid overhead of a GUI on a server when there's much
better stuff to do it like Debian or FreeBSD. Hell...ubuntu server is
amazingly easy to setup as a LAMP box. A lot of the websites that are
out there are a bit too ambitious for the hardware they're hosted from
in my opinion. I've heard of and seen people setup an XP (*spit*) box
as a webserver running on a 466MHz processor with 128MB RAM...MOST of
which is going to the explorer gui!
Bringing us to the question what are we doing to promote linux? (/me
starts a separate thread)

IMO the worst culprits are sites like 'MySpace' and 'You Tube' its just a
mish mash of Aaaaggggrrrhhhh

I'm not so bothered about the Server software in respect of this thread just
the awful *Look and Feel* of websites in general I just wonder if the
creators even look at their finished product and if they do when's their
next appointment at SpecSavers!

Then, just to add salt to the already smarting wounds, you find the
site has won some bloody web building award!!!!!! WHAT????? The
fishing club I am a member of has just this sort of set up and yes
they won an award for it. It's bloody horrible!!!!!
Oh, my other pet hate is where sites are only configured for one
resolution. As is the new Yahoo Mail layout. It's awful with my res'
of 800x600. I don't want to change my resolution, why should I? That
smacks of Microsoft dictatorship :-(

If you're working as a professional web designer, I think it would be well
worth your while learning to code by hand. HTML isn't hard at all. PHP is
perhaps a little harder, but once you've spent a little time learning
you'll find it's a delightful language to use. You might well find that if
you learn to write code by hand, you'll never use FrontPage again.

Thanks for the info. Actually its only now and again I do the Front Page
job's generally its a Joomla site, well they're very easy, pre-made (Pretty
much) and quicker to turn around.
You may or may not know but my actual job is Sales Manager so web sites are
just a personal interest which fortunately I can sell which means work cant
moan "That's not what we employ you for". I do own one of those teach
yourself PHP in 24 hours books which I tend to use as a reference now and
again.

Hm, I could view it in Firefox and IE, personally I'd hide the border on
the *frame* get rid of the stupid speckled background, align the thing in
the middle, get the *Creators Name* off the picture and have a proper
Designed By, Copyright ect at the bottom of the page.
I reckon there's about 20 minutes of work there to make it presentable, not
perfect or outstanding but at least it would not look like a 10 year old had
knocked it together.

tbh there should be a Web Design Council with voluntery members who
can help sort out websites or bring them closer to the W3C standards
(allow it to function in all browsers), sort of like the BCS (British
Computing Society) like body. Average Joe could report websites which
they feel "aren't quite" meeting the mark and the council would then
advise the website owners on how to bring the site to a "more
suitable" level of web usuability. Could probabily get goverment
funding too...

I dont use windows :P I know...the java console on Linux is filled with
shizzle whenever you goto websites like that, I go there for fun to see
their poor little codes trying to crack into my c drive :D

Arch Linux is an independent i686-optimized community distribution for
intermediate and advanced Linux users. Utilising a Rolling Release System
packages are regularly updated and an ISO release is just a snapshot to the
stable packages at that time. So there's no need for a fresh install the
command 'pacman –Syu' upgrades the whole system.

New subject: Free VGA cables for KVM switch
Hi,
I have two black VGA cables which I bought for a KVM switch, but never
used. They have male VGA plugs on both ends (male screw threads for
securing, too). They're good quality, shielded cables. New and unused.
Free to anyone who will collect them from Edgmond Common, TF10 8ES.

I could certainly use them but can't get over to you :-( I have a
four port KVM and I do have cables for it.. problem is they are a bit
short and extremely unflexible which means that the box often gets
pulled off :-(
