Hello Martin,
It's an interesting project - and I'm sure will be invaluable to
many people. Continuing the aside however, what about permaculture
projects to _grow_ suitable fuel oil? These will persist long after
the NimH batteries have exceeded their cycle duty.
Of course without appropriate mechanical technology (lamps), this
does involve a fire hazard.
For those following the thread who have reservations about donating
PCs to five sixths of the world's population, many of the arguments
from either side can be seen in the olpc fora; but you might
also be interested in other (appropriate) technological work carried
out by
aptivate.org - with their focus on access to *information*
Another project that has prompted the Vanuatu work is:
http://www.lutw.org/
V interesting - although their technology comparisons wilfully
ignore bio-fuels :-(
btw If you're involved with lutw, can you let their webmaster know that
her site breaks Accessibility legislation, and cannot be viewed by
a significant number of people trying to access it - a basic fix
for now would be some navigable text content on the homepage :-/
