Hi All, I'm trying to use mklivecd to create a disaster disc for my laptop with all updates installed and my WiFi drivers so it's just a case of reinstalling if have a major problem. Does anyone have any experience of this? Main prob at the moment is that it creates livecd.iso but it looks too small and won't boot anyway. The problem with liveCD is you'll have to burn it over and over which contrary to popular belief will degrade the disk. Better to get a USB ext HDD or Pen Drive and rsync to that, once you've done the first run you can then do incremental updates. Its possible to do a mirror image as well. I knew that. What you want is a distro .iso but with the latest released updates as the install packages eg overwriting any packages that have newer or updated releases. Oh and all the drivers plus your setup as well. I've never used LiveCD so don't know how it works.

All my problems were caused by trying to create the iso in too small a folder. mklivecd doesn't give you any error msgs - it just carries on and produces a duff image!

Well done. So I take it LiveCD does a disk image, dumps it in a folder then copy's that to a CD (or DVD?) which is what Nero Burning does in effect. You know what you have to do now don't you? Wipe your machine and see if it works :-D

So as I said its 'Drive Copy' with some jiggery pokery to make it (As the name says) a livecd of your system with the option to install from that disk if you so wish. It probably follows the same principles as used by the likes of Ubuntu etc for their live cd's except yours obviously takes your config settings, fstab and wireless settings etc, and writes them to the cd. Have you tried running it on an another box with different hardware to see what happens? (As a live CD of course) I presume it runs just fine if it follows along the same principals of any live CD.

Um, I didn't ask that, if I read your reply correctly. I asked (See above) if it ran as a live cd on another machine? I made no mention of installation although that begs another question in respect of how does it install/run on a totally different hardware setup if at all seeing as it was created on a specific machine the idea being that you can get 'that specific machine' back up and running from the disk?

Also: Have you tried/ do you know how to run sbmanager on a usb stick? My bios has a boot option "usb fdd" but I can't get it to see sbm on the stick, maybe it's a question of format on the memory? I'm stuck there.

I suppose I could put a floppy drive in the box.

haven't read much of this thread but i assume you're trying to boot off a usb drive.. it's not that hard, mount the drive as sd* add it to fstab, put it in your boot loader.. select at boot good thing for you guys to check would be the flashlinux setup http://flashlinux.org.uk/userguide
