Hi All
So OK only 6 people have bothered to get off their bum and actually vote
but from that very small percentage we can see that the Lug, as in name,
should be left alone but that the consensus is "Its all going pear
shaped guv'nor".

I've been largely ignoring the debate, because I currently don't have
time to either read the mass of e-mails that I've been getting about
meetings etc, or to attend a meeting. This isn't likely to change for
some time.
I won't vote on how the LUG should/shouldn't change, because I'll not
be very involved either way, and I don't think it's reasonable for me
to have much say if I'm not going to be involved.

Yeah it has got a bit tediuos. ;-)

Not true, if you're on the list you're a member you have as much a say
as anyone else you don't get brownie points for going to meetings or
extra privileges.
Any Lug does not have to 'meet' to make it a Lug the list is your Lug!
We live in a technological boom where you can hook up with anyone
anywhere in the world, know every detail about them. Live, love and cry
with them unfortunately this Lug has not embraced that technology as
others have, I'm not pointing the finger or anything it just appears the
list has got hung up on irrelevant points "Well I went to a meeting and
there was only 6 people" "Are we North or South?".
Some good suggestions have been made, I picked up on them but I think
they've been drowned by the "Eye off the ball comments.
1. The Web Site should be given a Viking funeral and a phoenix created.
2. The Lug should be on identi.ca, Twitter, ping.fm and any other micro
3. People should get into #staffslug more (Including me)
4. Every member is an Ambassador, get more members e.g. Kidnap,
Blackmail and even Honey trap (Only kidding)
5. Add your ideas here!

identi.ca group for the lug. its url is:

think it might even bring in new members to the lug. About the site I

things like push updates/articles to things like identi.ca etc. I've set
it up on my own home server and its a breeze to use.

Personally I don't think Wordpress is what you need, if you intend to
run Forums/Community builders/Calendars/Events etc you'll need Joomla,
Drupal Blah blah blah. While you can create 'links' to standalone
features like Gallery2 you'd be better off having a proper cms (Content
Management System) rather than say;
/wordpress
---------------/Gallery
-------------------------/Forum
That could end up a lotta storage and a '/path nightmare'
Having said that I hate Forums so wouldn't join one if we had one I much
prefer mailing lists anyway.
Just some thoughts from experience, chuck em on the fire if you like :-)

I'm thinking that we need something that allows members to be interactive
with the site (publish articles etc), I'm guess wordpress isn't going to
offer that, which is why I originally went with e107 (before anyone says
anything, I know it's not really been used!).
I've not had any experience setting up Joomla, so help would be
appreciated, if that is the route we want to go down (which sounds like it
may be).
Anyone got any issues if we loose the forum board stuff? (I think I've
already asked this, but while people are in the mood for change, I'll jump
in again :o) )

I'd have to agree.. Really, a simple website like Wordpress (which DOES
provide multiple user management for posting/editing etc., Dave) for
publishing news and articles (K.I.S.S.) and then the mailing list/IRC
for discussion.
Adding every different type of communications method (i.e. Forums etc.)
under the sun, really adds complexity that a (relatively small) group of
individuals can support.
If we were twice the count in members, then perhaps we'd have enough to
keep the website/mailing-list/IRC AND forums active. As it stands, there
just doesn't appear to be enough members.

Ok, from previous comments made.
Firstly I think we should look at using just the one e-mail list for
starters. I think the sensible thing would be to stat using the North
Staffs specific one as that is where the majority of the members of
this LUG are. Leave the South Staffs one to be sorted at a later date
if (when) a proper South Staffs LUG can be built up. Let's
concentrate on this one for now.
Forums. I have a lot, and I mean a lot, of forum experience. I run a
number of them and I'm a member of a lot more. I feel that forums are
more useful for static information. Facts and HOW TO's that people
will want ot access from time to time. Those sort of things are
easier if they are catalogued on a forum than if they are put on a
mailing list. Whereas a mailing list is always far more friendly, to
me anyway.
What do you think?

Ok, fair enough. I haven't contributed to the calls for a Wordpress
'site' as I haven't any experience of it. I'm quite willing to take a
look at it though and then make a considered statement of my opinion
on it :-)
Does anybody object if I do a mock up of the sort of forum I am
thinking of? It would only be a mock up but could, if you all liked
it, be made permanent.

I use irc for business meetings, and irc or jabber to
work things through with developers.
I don't even check e-mail that often when I've got
things to do, except days like to day where I'm using
it to bounce project ideas back and forth with several
others.

I agree a forum is too much work. you have to pick some mods etc. I also
don't have the time to check forums when im on the move but things like
email my rss feed from identi.ca/twitter are easily checked.
