I'm just curious to see if anybody else is having installation
problems. It's possible that it simply doesn't like my mobo, yet, the
*buntu's work fine with it. Fedora (6 & 7) and Gentoo (& Sabayon, an
offshoot) won't play with this particular machine either.
No, I don't have any more data at the moment but I will make some
notes later on...

I love it. 10.2 sucked...but the new version is very nice. I also had
install problems, but it turned out the disk was not burned well. What stage
in the install do you get to before it fog's up.

Hmm, I actually quite liked both 10.1 and 10.2 but, to be absolutely
honest I did not use either very much. I cannot remember just how far
in it got before dying. I remember seeing it probing for USB devices
and then going on from there. That's it. I was froze (this was
yesterday afternoon in my workshop) and I just wanted to get back in
the house.
Now, as I mentioned in my earlier mail, I am presently trying to
install onto an older PC that was running 10.2 very nicely just
sloooooooowly (AMD 500 coupled with just 256mb of PC133 RAM), it
appears to be working :-) So, I am left thinking that the IDE
controller on the other PC that I initially tried is not very Linux
friendly :-( Shame because it's a much better specced PC with an AMD
1.8 CPU and 756mb of RAM. Ok, I need to flick the KVM switch back
over to the other PC now. More later when it's installed.

SUSE is cursed! any version with *2* in it is infected with the ghost
of crap! every single release from SuSE 7.2, SUSE 8.2 SuSE Pro 9.2
openSUSE 10.2 has needed to be taken outside and hit repeatedly with a
bit of wood with a rusty nail through it.
All the other numbered version are brilliant and a pleasure to use.
You just cant get it installed coz your rubbish :-P
Maybe you could bring it round so I can laugh at it?

Arch Linux is an independent i686-optimized community distribution for
intermediate and advanced Linux users. Utilising a Rolling Release
System packages are regularly updated and an ISO release is just a
snapshot to the stable packages at that time. So there's no need for a
fresh install the command 'pacman –Syu' upgrades the whole system.

I think I need a pair of gloves...or better still, get a new gas
bottle for the heater. It is bloody freezing in here. Still, things
are going ok and it does keep the PC's cool. I'm just hitting upgrade
conflict hell. Nothing I can't handle though :-)

Sorry, am behind on my LUG mail...
Try booting it with various kernel parameters, like noapic, noacpi or
noauto. These are detailed by hitting F1, F2, F3 etc at the installer's
boot prompt. These options are normally passed to the installer at the
boot prompt in the form:
linux <options>
Such as
linux noacpi
Ultimately though, it may make no difference if your hardware isn't
supported by the kernel used by the installer.
Also try booting without the splash screen and 'CTRL-alt'ing between F1
and F6 during the installation as they contain diagnostic, boot and
installer output.

Cheers Adam :-) Actually, I should have thought of trying those. At
the time I was so bloody cold I couldn't be bothered :-) A couple of
days later I got it installed on my old, old PC (500mhz AMD K7 with
256mb of RAM). It took forever to install but now that it's on it
runs actually quite nicely :-) On the original PC I tried it on
Kubuntu is fine but absolutely no other distro will install. It's
probably a vagary of one of the options you suggested. No matter as
I'll keep it solely running Kubuntu, it's happy with that and so am I
:-)
