Hi All
OK so I've come by a Fujitsu Amelo D-7830 P4 3GB every distro I tried
refused to install even Live CD's seem to just sit there. There is
nothing wrong with the ROM drive to be fair I think its a BIOS issue
(Gonna flash it tonight) Anyway I finally managed to get Mepis
installed on it by pretending it was an old machine from the "Install
Choices" section the installation is now fully updated.
I'd like to get the latest Ubuntu/Kubuntu on it but this looks like it
can only be acheived via the Internet can I do the -dist-upgrade trick
like you can do with Hoary--->Dapper?
My plan is to edit the sources.list and give the Ubuntu 6.10 repos
1. Will this work?
2. Will it replace Mepis with Ubuntu?

Most Slackware distributions run on the Amillo D-7830's hardware...
Slackware 9.1 is confirmed, but it is an old kernel.
Debian fires up on a D6830 but suspend to disk and suspend to ram do not
function.
I will keep looking up information, to see if kubuntu/ ubuntu. As for
replacing the distribution's files, I do not know. If you get the chance,
try and download the alternate installation cdrom, if you haven't tried
that yet, because it sometimes fixes a good load of bugs, i do not know how,
but when the gui installer didn't work for me i used the alternate installer
and it went through fine.

Now that's interesting. Reboot works shutdown (This morning) failed
that's usually easy to fix normally I'd add "shutdown=poweroff" to
grub etc

The strange thing is the Ubuntu live cd ran on it on Tuesday, true I
had to leave it for 3/4 of an hour but now anything I stick in gets as
far as loading the minimal kernel on the disk (Not the proper one but
the one used for installations) and just sits there.

Hmm, intriguing. Have a look on linux for laptops, or what ever that website
is called, sometimes there are informative comments on distributions for
specific models.

I would automatically suspect something was failing hardware wise.

To be honest it doesn't really matter what OS is being used if the
either HD or the RAM is starting to play up. Although, saying that,
Linux and probably the various BSD flavours are actually quicker to
tell you that RAM is starting to fail. I've had a few PC's refuse to
play ball with Linux and I then thought it was just lack of support of
hardware somewhere along the line. Quite often Windows would go on
just great and work fine. But then, after a few months it would start
to crash a little too often. It nearly always turns out that a RAM
stick is failing. Pop some fresh stuff in and lo and behold Linux
will indeed load and run beautifully.
Which brings me neatly to my dearly held theory that Windows, as
insecure as it maybe, is not actually as flaky as we might like to
make out. How many times have you heard people moan about Windows
crashing all the time? Yes, I know, lots :-) Yet I have honestly
never had major problems in the same manner as others. Heck, I've
even succesfully ran Win 98 and Win Me :-) I truly believe - Dick has
heard all this before by the way - that a lot of problems people have
is purely down to bad RAM. With Linux not being so tolerant of bad
RAM right from the word go it just does not surface so much when using
Linux. Then of course Linux gets a bad reputation for not working on
many PC's...but that's another story.

To be fair Kris is closer to the truth, having spent a couple of hours
on some IRC channels it would appear that the Fuji's are a bit
notorious in being flaky when it comes to Linux.
However so far I've been advised to try the apci=no option along with
some others

You see, Linux wont boot with bad gear in the machine, Windows, on the other
hand will...causing you to be able to loose data etc. Windows just ignores
the errors.

Not really, the clue was in the "I left it for 3/4 of an hour" I
reckon while I was away studying my navel hair the thing struggled
along then probably ignored some feature/service and spewed into life.
When I tried last night I got the hump after 10 minutes and powered
off and back on again maybe if I had left it (for 3/4 of an hour) it
would have fired up.
Anyway as I say Mepis is installed and runs fine so there cant be any
hardware problems it picked up the internal NIC so Internet access, as
always, is three quarters of the battle won.

I did acpi=off which I doubt had any effect, the cd ran, I got the
"pnp BIOS caused a fatal error" then promptly continued as soon as the
desktop appeared I pressed install.
Not bad only took 15 minutes currently getting 107 updates 1 hour 20
that's longer than the install!!
Looks like I have a night of customising ahead of me :-)
