Can anybody tell me what to look for regarding blown components on a
motherboard? I've been given an old Pentium III board (socket 370)
which I would love to use in place of another one. The trouble is it
will not boot. In fact all that happens is that the fan spins for the
CPU. There are no obvious burn marks anywhere and no obvious areas
where components have been damaged.... Apart from 3 capacitors. They
are standard looking electrolytics. All the rest look, well,
good...tops are flat and clean. These 3 however are lsightly raised
(as if they have been blown up inside) and have a slight crusty
residue on them on the top. Hence I'm assuming these are the faulty
bits. Would I be right?
I have unsoldered one of the caps and have found it has a value of
1500uf 6.3v and is rated at 105degrees. Is there anywhere local
(South Staffordshire area) that I might be able to get some of these?
From a net search they appear to be very cheap (pence).

rapid electronics online or screwfix are your best bet, if it isn't
the capacitors it's probably died of old age to a cause which isn't
cost effective - in reality it could be all sorts which aren't visible
to the naked eye - northbridge, bios, pci slots.. I have a machine in
a similar condition here, except i can get bios - can't do much else
(like install at all) ! it's a footrest now.

I'm shocked they managed to get it fixed, more patient than i am - and
i'm nearly a pro at soldering.

Well thankfully replacing these cap's will not involve anything quite
so intricate. Having done some searching I reckon it is definitely
these cap's that have blown. They display the classic signs. I've
found some on the net and they are dirt cheap so I may as well give it
go.
Now, Andy, a duff BIOS can be fixed :-) if you know how :-))) black
art but very possible. Even if it is due to a bad flash it wouldn't
be totally unrecoverable...

be totally unrecoverable...
Yeh, but when it's not the bios - because in certain hardware
arrangements (with no hard drive) it boots normally, same without a
cdrom.. so they're both rendered useless (binned them a while back)..
i replaced them and found it wouldn't write to the hard disk.. i'd
call that a motherboard issue and leave it as a footstool :) - so much
for my sister's "cbeebies" machine (yes thats all she goes on!) but
hey, i gained a footrest so it's all good! - except for her i guess
