I don't have an account (that I know of!). I did downloaded
something
recently though but I'm sure I did not have to create an account to do
so.
I followed the link and got a page saying removed due to possible
illegal content!
You don't need an account to download stuff. However, if you do and
the file is in, say for example, 4 parts due to it's being rather
large then it is much easier. Otherwise you have to wait to download
each separate part. Sometimes up to about 90 minutes in between each
one. I can just grab all parts at the same time. I tend to use it to
get tv programmes that I have missed or have not recorded properly and
mp3 files that I no doubt already have as a CD or more likely an LP
and can't be arsed to faff around ripping myself. I don't like
iPlayer or the others so this suits me far better.
They do quite often remove stuff that is illegal. Usually microsoft
software which gets regularly 'shared'. I can honestly and truthfully
state that I have never shared anything on there with others.
