more people should be using it. BUT. What are you doing within your
life to further promote the use of open source as a viable alternative
to MS and other closed source products?
Do you recommend it to people when their computers break? Do you hand
out CDs are the local computer fair and to your mates etc?

Implemented MRBS <http://mrbs.sourceforge.net> on a Ubuntu server at my
place of work.
Introduced Knoppix as a rescue tool there too + Testing network access
control on Linux.
Implemented ClarkConnect at a Stafford Youth organisation, also Open Office,
Scrubus and other Open Source software on XP there.

I feel that it's an important issue in the open source community. I
just wondered what this LUG's general attitude to it was, whether people
are doing anything to promote the use of open source and try to get
people to convert.
That and I think it's interesting to see how actively committed people
are to the idea of open source and whether it's more of a personal thing
for them or a public thing.

I see.
My sense, from the title of your post and the way it was written, was one of
challenge rather than an expression of curiosity.
For my part it's both a personal thing, I like to use it myself (Ubuntu and
FreeNAS) at home and to promote it's use at work. As I work for the local
authority, the more FOSS there is then the less my taxes are wasted on
inappropriate propitiatory software.

Well tbh, I first of heard of Linux when I was 12 when I was in
School. My friend bought a computer magazine with a full page SuSE
advert, and ever since I've been intreaged. It wasn't till I was 15 I
actually used Linux for the first time, Mandrake 8.2. Since then I've
had at least a dual boot on my machine. I even went a good year or so
Linux only with Ubuntu but I eventually got bored and wanted to play
some games so had to go back to dual boot.
Interms of how do I give back? I've written a few howtos over the
years, including a howto setup the eariler versions of the
Audioscrobbler Plugin on Ubuntu, which prooved popular. I've messed
about with LAMP stuff, and have given back through various forums and
IRC channels. I've generally done bits and bobs over the years, some
novice-artwork, howtos, forum posts, IRC. When I was in school I used
to tell everyone about Linux even if I brushed past them in the
corridor, I actually annoyed alot of my friends until they tried it.
Most of them tried it thought it was cool and discarded it.
My ultimate aim would be writting code for the kernel itself, but I'm
very much a novice C coder. Hopefully my Computer Science and
Software Engineering Degree will help me out with that.

about a piece of software I pipe up and suggest something FOSS. Not
necessarily Linux either but FOSS nonetheless. Of course there is

Having read the the posts so far I reckon its a probably a genuine

2. Given away a Server to a LUG member for development purposes.
3. Given away loads and loads of hardware (Monitors, cards, HDD's ect)
4. Given away loads of 'Boxed versions of Linux operating systems'.
5. Given away *Mint condition Linux/open source books.
6. Physically helped loads of people install Linux on their machines.
7. Have membership of far too many lists and forums and IRC channels
(helping if I can)
8. Written some HOWTO's
9. Member of two development lists/teams (Ifolders and Covide)
10. Create VM Linux based appliances supplied to VMware website for download
by anyone.
11. Sell Open source solutions
12. Run some Linux based machines here at work.
13. Run dedicated Linux boxes and laptops at home.
13. Run a Linux advocacy website at my own expense.
Probably lots of other stuff to but I'm bored with listing everything now.

packages are regularly updated and an ISO release is just a snapshot to the
stable packages at that time. So there's no need for a fresh install the
command 'pacman –Syu' upgrades the whole system.

I didn't suggest that there is any obligation to be an activist or
evangelist! If that's what you picked up on then you're obviously
reading between the lines a little too much.
I was purely asking what do you do, if anything, to help spread the word
because whilst I don't go out and hand out CDs or anything i suggest it
to friends when they complain at me because their windows installation
broke etc also I have tried to implement it at a school I worked at yet
they didn't want to keep it because when i left there was no one to
administer the systems.
I find the expansion and spread of linux/foss interesting surely there's
no harm in asking about that???
