If ever there was a bloody useful bit of software then Memtest must be it. I'd had stick of 256mb PC 133 memory sitting on my shelf for about 12 months. Originally it came out of a neighbours PC that was playing up. He'd decided to put it in from an old PC...without any sort of anti static guarding whatsoever :-( DUH!!! Not a good idea in my experience where both memory or CPU's are concerned. Anyway, he wanted to know why his PC was freezing all the time and rebooting for no reason. First thoughts of malware were discounted as I had installed anti this and anti the other (all on the Windows platform I'm afraid). So then I decided to try running with just one stick of memory, BINGO!!! Found it, bad memory. So, there it sat. The other day I finished off rebuilding a good old workhorse of a PC that happens to use PC133 memory. I started to think what if it wasn't dodgy after all? 256mb would be a good boost for this particular PC. So I tried a couple of memory testers...one ran for nearly 50 hours passing all tests until it suddenly just stalled. The other one stalled after 13 hours. Memtest? Well, it wouldn't run at all. But it left me thinking that I could have finished either of these tests after only 24 hours and say 10 or 12 hours respectively and thought the memory was ok after all. Good old Memtest just would not let it run at all though :-) Ah well, back to my search now for a decent 256mb stick :-) -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way.
