So what's stopping you, Andrew? If I had the skills I would be
seriously thinking about it myself. It sounds very interesting and
very exciting. I'd be totally out of my depth though :-)
It would have been good if the press had used the opportunity to point
out the fact that a hacker is actually a benign computer tinkerer
whereas a 'cracker' is actually the criminal aspect of it. I get
tired of hearing about all these evil and bad
'hackers'.....gaaaaaggghhhhhh.

haha, yeah putting "in my spare time i dabble in a little computer
hacking, pen testing, debugging" still seems too far out for most
organisations aroudn the globe to accept.. then again, we live in such
a cynical, paranoid world.. what more do we expect from it?
with regard to what's stopping me, nothing beside a maths A level,
computing A level and a science.. but i'll have those in a couple of
years (if things go right!)

There you go, I don't have any A levels to my name. I could have done
a degree in computer media when I was working at W'ton uni but I
wasn't happy with the programming modules. I have been to Cannock
College to learn Pascal and a few other odds and sods...it didn't last
long as me and programming do not go together. Now, give me a bag of
computer bits and I'll build you a PC or troubleshoot it but no
programming. I simply do not like it and someting I don't like I have
a mental block about learning it.
Mind you, I did save everybody 15 minutes of work in a City and Guilds
exam constructing databases. I realised that there was a shortcut
that was perfectly legitimate that saved all that time. In an exam 15
minutes can be a lifetime :-)

I think the basis for learning programming is probably first
understanding machine code/assembly (well..) and understanding the
electronics of what is happening in the machine.. after that you begin
to understand the different components which you can use to forge
parts of a program and the responses you will gain as a result, in a
perfect world that would work great - but that's why we have debuggers
in the end i guess.. to fiddle and make things work - by hook or by
crook! Programming is definetly an area i can see myself going into,
being able to construct programs based on my complex ideas is
something of an importance, as i struggle to explain some visuals i
get in my head of things working..

I'd say it depends on what kind of programming you want to do. We
covered a bit of assembler & machine code at university, and years of
fixing TVs etc, followed by the hardware-oriented units in my degree
course mean I've got a good understanding of electronics.
However, I don't think that has ever been useful to me as a
programmer. I dare say it's useful if you're doing really deep stuff
like kernel hacking, but high-level languages like Python & Perl mean
that you don't need to know anything at all about registers and memory
addressing. It's even possible to write code in C/C++ without knowing
anything about the internals, although C/C++ does give you the
opportunity to use the knowledge if you have it.
