I know it wouldn't fit in the case, but seeing as you only need it to for installation that probably wouldn't matter. As a (somewhat roundabout) alternative, I think it's possible to put an Ubuntu minimal install on a hard disk, have the machine boot that and then install a full system over the top of it (as the minimal install runs entirely in memory). I've not done this recently, but I can look into it a bit more if you like.

Spot of open-heart surgery on my antique server last night! For those on the surgical team last night, looks like the CD drive is goosed! I can boot it from floppies. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll see if I can get an IDE cd onto it, can't remember seeing a standard IDE slot though. There's no USB. The thing can boot pxe so maybe network install is possible. Never done it! Will see what the part is for the cd it is a slimline one. It's out of the ark, it's not SATA! It's a G1 server I think. dual PIII 1gig processors. I did the same thing on a Dell 4600 the other day swapped a DVDROM for the CDROM I think the DVD was out of an IBM laptop if memory serves?
