Virtual machines

At the LUG meet in January, we discussed virtual machines with Qemu
and VMWare. I've now got both running on my Ubuntu 5.10 box, so I
thought I'd post some useful links & notes.
Qemu runs under Linux and Windows (although I think the Windows port
is generally slightly behind the Linux version). Installing on Ubuntu
is as simple as using Synaptic, apt-get, aptitude or whatever to
install the "qemu" package, and any dependencies that it needs. On
Windows, you just need to download an installer and run it. One
potential advantage is that you can emulate a different processor, so
you could, for example, run MacOS in a virtual machine on your x86
box.

VMWare now offer a free-as-in-beer "VMWare Player", which will allow
you to use already-created images, but it won't create hard drive
images. As far as I know, it only emulates x86 processors, unlike
Qemu. This is available for Linux and Windows, and can be downloaded
from:
http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
I haven't tried it on Windows (I suspect it's a standard installer).

Both Qemu and VMWare use "disk images" which are basically big files
that the emulator uses as a hard drive. The VMWare player won't create
a disk image, but Qemu can create VMWare-compatible disk images. The
link above includes instructions on how to do this.

Just to see if I could, I installed Qemu on my virtual Windows 2000.
It worked. Below is a screenshot of DamnSmallLinux running in Qemu on
Windows 2000, which is running in VMWare on Ubuntu:

Memtest does it again :-) (computing in general)

If ever there was a bloody useful bit of software then Memtest must be
it. I'd had stick of 256mb PC 133 memory sitting on my shelf for
about 12 months. Originally it came out of a neighbours PC that was
playing up. He'd decided to put it in from an old PC...without any
sort of anti static guarding whatsoever :-( DUH!!! Not a good idea
in my experience where both memory or CPU's are concerned. Anyway, he
wanted to know why his PC was freezing all the time and rebooting for
no reason. First thoughts of malware were discounted as I had
installed anti this and anti the other (all on the Windows platform
I'm afraid). So then I decided to try running with just one stick of
memory, BINGO!!! Found it, bad memory. So, there it sat. The other
day I finished off rebuilding a good old workhorse of a PC that
happens to use PC133 memory. I started to think what if it wasn't
dodgy after all? 256mb would be a good boost for this particular PC.
So I tried a couple of memory testers...one ran for nearly 50 hours
passing all tests until it suddenly just stalled. The other one
stalled after 13 hours. Memtest? Well, it wouldn't run at all. But
it left me thinking that I could have finished either of these tests
after only 24 hours and say 10 or 12 hours respectively and thought
the memory was ok after all. Good old Memtest just would not let it
run at all though :-)
Ah well, back to my search now for a decent 256mb stick :-)

Phone numbers + camera for tonight?

Secondly... does anybody, who is going along tonight, own a half way
decent digital camera? It would be good to take a couple of shots for
posterity. Plus, I might just write up a short piece for Linux Format
Magazine. The feature LUGs in the back pages and it would give us
some good publicity. A photograph is always appreciated by magazine
editors :-) I would use my digital camera but it's not really up to
it, it does for my few fishing shots but that's about it.

Web site calendar

I've just tried to add the meeting on the 25th to the calendar, but I
couldn't work out how to do it. Am I just being stupid, or is it

Meeting date/time

KDE and Thunderbird

Hi
Thanks to everyone who replied to my question about calendars
yesterday. I have decided to use web calendar at the moment, but i do
like the idea of the sunbird project from Mozilla, so I will be having a
nose round to see what I can achieve with that.
I now have an odder question to see if people have come accross. I am
running Debian Unstable with KDE 3.5. When I save my session all my
applications remember they were open and open up again when I log back
in, however Thunderbird doesnt, does anyone have any ideas why, or how
to make it do so ?

Calendar

Afternoon gents
Hope every one is having a good weekend ?
I am looking for a calendar that I can access both via a browser and a
desktop application, the reason being, I am often on the road and dont
have access to my work outlook callendar and then I am at home and dont
have access to.
