Eating tomorrow?
by Kevanf1
Are we eating at the place next door to Wetherspoons or getting one of
their fine curries? It is curry night on a Thursday after all :-) I
don't suppose that there is problem if some want to one and not the
other....of course greedy buggers like me might just have two lots of
curry :-))))

I have been in touch with the admin' of the lug.org.uk website. We
should shortly be listed on there as the North Staffordshire LUG.
I've been trying to find out what happened to the South Staffs LUG,
mailing list etc... It's listed on the LUG site but in about 5 years
I have not seen or heard anything from them. The e-mails I send have
been - seemingly - ignored. Don't worry, I'm not leaving you guys, I
would however, like to drum up some more Linux support in my area down
South of the county. So...watch this space ;-)

Electronic components
by Kevanf1
Can anybody tell me what to look for regarding blown components on a
motherboard? I've been given an old Pentium III board (socket 370)
which I would love to use in place of another one. The trouble is it
will not boot. In fact all that happens is that the fan spins for the
CPU. There are no obvious burn marks anywhere and no obvious areas
where components have been damaged.... Apart from 3 capacitors. They
are standard looking electrolytics. All the rest look, well,
good...tops are flat and clean. These 3 however are lsightly raised
(as if they have been blown up inside) and have a slight crusty
residue on them on the top. Hence I'm assuming these are the faulty
bits. Would I be right?
I have unsoldered one of the caps and have found it has a value of
1500uf 6.3v and is rated at 105degrees. Is there anywhere local
(South Staffordshire area) that I might be able to get some of these?
>From a net search they appear to be very cheap (pence).

Snow!
by Andrew Edwards
Just spreading the word ;-) .. trying to get anywhere today will
probably fail, so don't bother... sit back with a hot drink.
I actually can't see 20 feet infront of my window here so I'm fixing
my atheros chipset wifi (laptop integrated), madwifi driver can't seem
to control it via wpasupplicant..I'm struggling to comprehend the
problem and downgrading to a supposedly working (coexistant) version
of the programs, seems to have named the adapter something else
again.. ath0 to wifi0? Anyone have any ideas? I'm trying to connect to
a WPA-PSK network which uses a passphrase.
Regards,
Andrew

New users...Meet? Ideas? Direction?
by Andrew Edwards
We keep getting more users stumbling onto the site, which is a great
thing (it's at what 70 odd now?).. So lets get a meet setup - I'm
thinking social in a bar/pub, then again we could go the formal &
social route if anyone knows a place to do presentations (then the bar
after to do some thinking or...drinking)? Throw some suggestions back
and we can set it for mid-march 18-19 time or so, which will give a
good 3 weeks for the calendar. Reply with ideas for style, times,
venues.. or suggestions for topics? i.e. Linux on laptops? Linux and
wireless? Linux and the next 10 years?..The direction of server
software development for the mobile generation? Or reply if you think
I'm a fool who should shutup also ;-)
It'd be good to get some more events/reviews onto the site. Anyway,
it's down to you guys.. to decide what, where.. if the time is
appropriate?
Regards,
Andrew
