Times 2
by stuart bell
Seen the Times2 supplement today?
In a daft article about men and gadgets. Linux actually gets a mention
as an alternative to M$oft.

My network details will be coming...
by Kevanf1
I'll get the details from the SuSE box probably either Sunday or more
likely Monday. If you all recall my none talking to each other LAN
:-(
By the way, what does IP forwarding do? Probably not relevant but I'm
curious as to what it means :-)

Boot disc's
by Dick Turpin
Hi All
We all see regular posts regarding Boot CD's, floppies etc and most of
us know about UBR (Ultimate boot disc) Hiren's boot cd and of course
your own distro's rescue/repair discs.
Something very strange happened to my SUSE box grub became stuffed for
some reason error 17 anyway as usual I firked around and made things
worse and spent most of the day trying SUSE repair and all the above
disc's plus some others I have.
The thing was I knew the installation was OK all I needed to do was
get it to boot I had fixed the MBR as far as good old Windows is
concerned but could not get the openSUSE working anyway after some
googeling I came across Super Grub Disk
http://supergrub.forjamari.linex.org/
Go to the download section and get the EN floppy its a bit long winded
but hey presto openSUSE works so I now need to figure out how to
restore grub to the MBR as my openSUSE 10.2 DVD might be faulty as it
kept failing on the repair feature.
So download it now and add it to your "Oh my god what have I done?" tool kit :-)

Newbie: B.Wildurd
by alan kraft
Hello everyone.
I'm trying to use this mailing list for the first time and I'm not sure that
I've understood the process. I've tried to access the subscriber list, but
without success.
Anyhow, if you're reading this, may I thank Kris for his response to my
newbie thread, and invite further comments from others.
The reason for my nom-de-lug should soon become apparent!
Regards, Alan.

Ha, I've got FC7 (test) :-P
by Dick Turpin
Evening All
Just a bit of pointless waffle really but I installed FC7 (Prime) on
this Fujitsu laptop late yesterday. I was hoping it would dual boot
with crappy Ubuntu however.
The partitioner is broken I think, it offered to use existing free
space then failed about 14 times. I removed the HDD and resized with
Partition Magic (On XP Home, ah bite me) then used a manual setup for
the FC7 Partitioner.
Grub may be broken, its only registering FC7 /dev/sda3 and not Ubuntu
/dev/sda1 I may fix that if I can be arsed.
It's a live CD (which I have) and uses the same method as Ubuntu in
that once booted you can do a hard install. Some packages are missing,
like 'Kontact' but theres lots of new goodies which makes a change.
Beryl is up and running KlamAV totally locks the laptop up.
Still got two problems which supposedly is this Fujitsu Amelio D7830
fault in that acpi has to be switched off eg acpi=off and at shutdown
it wont power off (which is possibly due to acpi being disabled) I
still have to press the power button.
The desktop background is the best yet hot air balloons, oh and the
login screen is pretty slick too.

Bagful Of Screws
by Frank Mitchell
Hi Kris,
A bagful of PC Screws to give away? Maybe you're the man then. I need maybe eight little Casing Screws, ensuring they have small heads so they fit into the recesses on the chassis.
The situation is: I bought a bargain PC from One-Stop-Computers of 173-175 London Road, Stoke. When I dismantled the case to fit a DVD Writer, the inside was incredibly neat, but I noticed certain screws were the fine Metric type, which were insecure compared to the UNC type.
Next question: Suppose like me you get over-enthusiastic about tightening the Casing Screws and start to strip one of the threads? What's the recommended fix?
Yours Truly: Frank Mitchell
