December Meeting
by Dave R
Hello all,
I know we are only half way into November, but I just wanted to know who
will be around for a potential December meeting. (Looking like the 13th)
So, if you can either post back to the mailing list, or let me know, that
would be great.

Anyone with old IDE disks, EDO memory or IIS/MS-SQL experience?
by Steven Maddox
Lo,
I have a dreamy AST Advantage Adventure 4066d... it's a PC with 66mhz
Cyrix goodness :)
Anyway it turned 15 years old on bonfire night, my first PC after the
Spectrum 128k (now 25 years old!).
I'd love to get a couple of 16mb EDO 60ns sticks for it to max out the
memory if anyone has any.
But also it'd be cool to get a hard disk that could have been plausibly
been available around 1995/6/7 about 2gb. I'm sure the BIOS suffers
from either the 1024 or the 4096 cylinder issue (either restricted to
504mb or 2.11gb). The PC currently has what it originally came with, a
500mb-ish Maxtor, but I remember it having a 2gb around 1997 (long gone)
and me using MaxBlast in the MBR to get over the restriction.
I intend on dual booting DOS/Win (that comes with) and Debian Bo, time
to break out LILO! :)
Any kit you have similar let me know...
Also...
I have the last of the assets of AST Research Inc. before they went bump
(don't know if anyone remembers them, they competed against Packard Bell
in the mid 90's).
It's mostly restore disks, bit of hardware, but also on DVD their old
support site (ari-service.com) including all drivers, firmware,
bulletins, etc... which is ASP based with MS-SQL.
I bought a copy of Win2k-AS a few months back and tried to set it up
again virtually, but I'm not the greatest MS-SQL/IIS expert and remember
having some issues - probably related to the ASP or the Database
linking. Originally it ran on NT4 I'm told, but at least Win2K-AS came
with RDP!
If anyone does have some really old memory, disks, or experience with
crappy Win2K web hosting lemme know directly since this isn't exactly
Linux related.
Thanks!

Hard Drives
by Adam Egan
Hi all,
I'm currently looking at experimenting by grabbing a new hard drive
for my laptop(s).
I'm looking at an SSD at the moment for a big speed increase... unless
anybody else can suggest anything better?
For my desktop I am looking at a WD VelociRaptor... they look pretty cool.
Anybody got any input on this?

Tech meeting - DL360
by Chris Snow
Spot of open-heart surgery on my antique server last night! For those on the
surgical team last night, looks like the CD drive is goosed! I can boot it
from floppies. The boot order was floppy,cd, hard drive.
Where to get a known good cd drive for it? Not that keen to risk ebay.

I would personally prefer to keep my file server and gateway seperate for security reasons to be honest. Going to have a look at OpenFiler though..

I've used it for ages but the latest two versions don't like my hardware :-(
FreeBSD's fault.
I'm looking at OpenFiler at the mo which does install but does not handle
the internet gateway stuff out-of-the-box.
Also downloaded Zentyal (nee eBox) and Untangle to try. Open to the idea of
a roll-your-own solution with Ubuntu server.
Chris.
