Meeting Monday 8th February 2010

Dear All,
The Feb meeting will be held on Monday 8th from 18.30 - 21.00ish at "The
Yard".
From what I gather there were a couple of things discussed from the
last meeting, so we will try and pick up on those, also if anyone has
anything in particular that they wish to talk about (excluding fried
fish the size of a small whale) post it up!

Unfortunately my e-mail provider has been experiencing major problems. If
anyone replied to my message about the free stuff by personal e-mail, it
may not have reached me. The problem now seems to be fixed, so if anyone
sent a message, perhaps they could send it again? Or if anyone else is
interested, please get in touch. I need the space, so I can't keep the
equipment for long.

Javascript Problem

Hi,
Would it be ok to submit a javascript problem?. I simply cannot figure out
why a function exits and is called again from somewhere but I am stumped as
to how it happens. I am not a programmer but I have done quite a bit of
scripting.
I have tried in all major browser and the problem occurs in all of them.
I'll post the whole script, html - css and javascript with a description of
the problem if one of you clever guys wouldn't mind have a quick look.

March 2010 Meeting (Monday 8th March)

Hello all,
I know we've only just had the last meeting, but I wanting to send this
email out while I remember!
The next meeting will be on the 8th March at "The Yard" between 18.30 - 21:00
If anyone has any issue with this date/time, please let me know.
Also, if anyone has anything in particular they would like to talk about,
or to have a talk on, again please let me know.

Re Mar 8th Meeting

As a new subscriber who hasn't been able to attend meeting on Mon
evenings I hope to make 8th March. I'm from Stafford but would be
prepared to go to Stoke etc if time was right.
What I want from meetings is just the opportunity to talk about Linux &
associated topics.

pf ruleset causing problems with N95

I've recently been making an effort to get my N95 to work on my LAN. I
have reason to believe that for some reason, my router/ruleset is
inhibiting the phone's access.
My ruleset is here: http://pastebin.com/m56dadcd8
basically, i cannot download files on my phone, or use the sync,
spotify, gmail or similar applications. When I try to download a file,
it seems to be listed as 2KB, and then nothing happens. I'm not sure
what on earth could be causing it, and I have tried playing around
with the rules.
taking the router out of the equasian does fix the matter.

p.s. I've had the following response which has as of yet not helped me
cure the problem...
"i had a similar problem on my iphone/podtouch... try to enable any
fix-mss option in your pppoe client (i suppose u use one)"

Fwd: March 2010 Meeting (Monday 8th March)

I haven't been to a StaffsLUG meeting for a few years. When I first
moved to Stoke in about 2006 I attended a few meetings (one in Simon's
house on the Staffordshire moors, a couple in Stafford), then they
dried up. I haven't been to any lately because having a 2 year old son
has made it impractical.
I work in Stafford. I finish at either 4-4:30 or 6pm. Next time
there's a meeting on a week when I finish at 6pm, I'm intending to
attend. I don't fancy hanging around in Stafford for a couple of hours
after work to attend a meeting, nor do I like the idea of driving
home, having dinner, then driving back to Stafford.
I haven't been to any meetings recently because it hasn't been
practical. I will come to one if and when it's practical. I haven't
suggested ideas for meetings because I'd be happy to come to a social
meeting. I don't expect anyone to organise a meeting around me, I'll
simply come when I can.

ISO Image dd To DVD+RW

Hi:
Latest issue of Linux Format Mag gives you a DVD ISO Image for FreeBSD v8.0,
which I happen to be interested in. I was also looking for an interesting use
for my DVD+RW disks. I read somewhere you could "dd" straight from an ISO
Image file to DVD+RW, though I couldn't remember where.
Previously I thought you could put an Ext2 Filesystem on DVD+RW, which turned
out to be wrong. It worked the first time I tried, but not the second. But
this experiment with "dd" worked, though I'm still unsure about how to use
some of the options properly. Basically (under Linux) I put:
dd if=FreeBSD-8.iso of=/dev/sr1 ibs=512 obs=32768 conv=sync
And my DVD+RW wrote okay, showing:
3986344+0 Records In
62286+1 Records Out
Note that DVDs use 2048-byte Sectors like CDs, but they're handled in
Error-Correcting Super-Blocks of 16. DVD+RW can write individual Sectors, but
only by updating the entire Super-Block. My first attempt tried writing with a
BlockSize of 2048, whereupon Drive /dev/sr1 sat there winding the disk back
and forth, presumably writing every Super-Block 16 times over. With a total
BlockSize of 32768 things went alot more smoothly. The 62286+1 Records Out
are Super-Blocks with an extra one partially written. The original 3986344
Records were 512-byte Disk Blocks, which make a whole number of 2048-byte DVD
Sectors, but not Super-Blocks.
Then I wrote it back to a file so I could check the result using diff:
dd if=/dev/sr1 of=CHECK.ISO bs=2048 count=996586 conv=notrunc
Here it's okay to read the DVD as 2048-byte Sectors, because they're
individually addressable. You need the count to stop the entire DVD getting
imaged, all 4.7 GB, which happened the first time I tried. And of course it's
the count of 2048-byte Sectors, which is 3986344/4.
CHECK.ISO was identical to the original Iso Image, and I was able to use the
DVD+RW to install FreeBSD v8.0. Which left me with the same Xorg
Configuration problems as FreeBSD v7.2, but that's another story...
