Ethernet over power lines.
by Kevanf1
Does anybody use the ethernet over power lines system at home? I
think the brand was Devolo but there may be others? Anyway, it's the
way of setting up a home network by pugging the ethernet cable into a
special power socket plug, I'm sure you all know what I mean. I just
wondered if there are any restrictions on usage. by that I mean does
the network all have to be on the same breaker circuit (downstairs
sockets or upstairs sockets) or does it use the earth wire?

Server virtualisation with openfiler SAN?
by Chris Snow
Anyone running virtual servers with Open Filer SAN?
I'm thinking of trying to run mobile thin clients with virtual terminal
servers (on vmware) with an openfiler iscsi SAN.
I'd be interested in anyone's experience of combining any server
vitrualisation (if terminal servers then great!) with the openfiler
configured as san.

What is happening with this months meeting? Some of us arent going to be free on the 14th obviously... And lots of people will go out making venues potentially too busy...

Subject: [Staffslug] Feb Meeting

Hello All,
As we aren't having the official meeting this month, I decided to get the
ball rolling for Feb's meetings.
So, from emails flying around, there is requests for a different venue, so
does anyone else have another venue for the social meeting?
Thank you
Dave

Could It Be You?

Hello All,
Do you think you could run a lug group?
Would you like to?
If you feel you would like the chance to head up the lug, then shout up!

IRC channel
by Andrew Edwards
Hi All
The reason for my post is that I have noticed the majority of our
regular channel users are also using irc.z.je (formerly
irc.nixhelp.org). I want to propose moving to this network for several
reasons.
1) Connecting is much quicker - feel free to try yourself.
2) There are less channels to use, however for our users convenience
we will appear clearly in the /list
3) The network is hosted mainly in the UK, which eliminates latency to
some extent
I realise that there may be issues for some users with the change,
therefore I propose we deal with this by implementing the following
1) Pjirc Java applet on the Staffslug site
2) use a DNS A host for irc.staffslug.org.uk and aim it at the z.je dns pool
I don't believe that we require the extensive help pages that Freenode
offers given that IRC has been around longer than the "web". Should
anyone feel it necessary - documentation could be produced quite
quickly and I would even do it myself to save arguments.
Does anyone have any objections/opinions on this?
All constructive criticism welcome.
Thanks for reading and if this does not apply to you (perhaps you
don't use IRC at all) then please don't feel you have to contribute
anything to this topic!
If anyone knows of a regular to the IRC channel who is not on the
list, please mention this to them.

Re: [Staffslug] IRC channel
by Kris Douglas
I can see why l, but I have a feeling freenode is more available to people
because it is often in the default client I.e. xchat. I am not personally
opposed, but if we do move, I am very much for having an
IRC.staffslug.org.uk A record. The main name of the server is pretty ugly
looking.
