Nokia N900

Those of you who attend meets may remember me having an unhealthy obsession with Stephen Maddox's N900.
This also culminated in him writing an excellent review on the device.
Well guess who just got one!
I am super happy and just wanted to let everyone know haha.
On a serious note though, if anyone has any experience with maemo or anything and has some hints, tips or fun things to tru, then please let me know!

March Meeting

Hello all,
I'm just looking into dates for the March meeting (as it's March next
week!) and it appears that the 14th is the one to go for.
Now, with concern to venue, if we go for "The Yard" and if that's closed
go for the Picture House (round the corner)? If anyone knows the current
status of The Yard, please let me know.
Now, I know we normally have social-tech-social, but I'm thinking we have
another social so we can sort out a few things:
- What we want to do in the tech meetings (get a more definitive list)
- Delegation of lug responsibilities
- Events that we might want to attend
- AOB
If you have anything else you would like to add, please let me know.

.htaccess

Hi,
Has anyone got a surefire way of getting the .htaccess in Apache 2 to work?
The platform is Suse11.3 (VM). I'd truly like to understand and solve this
one.
I have been everywhere with this and applied every (dozens) of fixes most of
which don't work and those that do are inconsistent like it works in Firefox
but not in IE or the error page works in FF but not in IE. Redirect has
never worked in any browser. I have even added comments to html files to
increase their size and get round the IE problem of not picking up files
smaller than 1kb. The other interesting feature is that, on the rare
occasions when it does work and the .htaccess file has been changed to
different instructions, the old instructions continue to be executed even
after clearing the browser cache, restarting the server, restarting the
client pc, ditching the cookies and changing the target html/php files'
content.
I have worked my way through the Apache manual and messed around with
httpd.conf and then re-installed everything but to no avail. My next move
was to install a WAMP server to see if that works but I get the same
symptoms there.
Is it Apache that deals with .htaccess or the browser or both? I know that
it has to be enabled in the apache conf file which it is and permission are
set correctly.
Any help, explanations, pointers advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'd second that - it takes over a whole server (or VM) and does the lot. Been running it at home for a few years now.

Mail Server

We are looking at supplying a email box to our ADSL customers and wondering
what people think the best mailserver and web interface you guys would
suggst.

The Lug

Hello All,
Well, for those that didn't attend the meeting on the 7th Feb, you missed
a really good evening.
There were tales of alien invasion only to be thwarted by
incompatibilities in IP versions (you had to be there!) and various other
things!
Anyway, from the meeting we actually talking about some official business.
So:
1. What do you want from the lug? (meetings / events etc)
2. Lug BBQ, would anyone be up for that?
3. A Lug outing. After the success of the Bletchley Park visit, we were
thinking of other venues, so if you have any ideas shout up! (or email me)
4. Tech Meetings - Firstly a big thank you to Russ for the venue last
year, it helped a great deal. Sadly to the tale end of last year the
numbers started to dwindle. So what do YOU want to have tech meetings on
and the main thing is, are there people who would like to front them?
5. A guest speaker? A few names were batted around, but we decided that
finances may not stretch to air fairs (we were thinking more the beer and
burger offer at the pub, with the lug members having the burgers!), so if
you know anyone in the community that is a available to do talks let us
know (obviously money is very restricted).
6. The leadership of the lug. From the general consensus it appears that
I am still el capitán, but as for reasons I mentioned at the meeting my
time is going to get more limited, so what I am looking for are deputy's
who could take on some of the running of the lug (arranging meetings etc),
so who would be up for that?
7. At the moment it appears that "The Yard" is under construction, so if
there is anyone who goes past it on a daily / weekly basis can they let me
know if it re-opens. At present we will reconvene at our first social
meeting place at the "Picture House" which is just round the corner.
I think that is about everything.
If you reply to this, maybe chop out the bits you aren't replying to as
the mails could get very big quickly.

Advice on installing Virgin super-hub

I have just taken delivery of a Virgin 'Super Hub' VMDG480 which handles
a 30Mb connection and combines features of
- Cable modem
- Wireless Router with 4 gigabyte Ethernet RJ45 connections
my current set up is
Virgin (Ambit) Cable Modem
-> Belkin F6D4230 wireless router (HS-Net) [also DHCP server]
-> Netgear FS108 switch (legacy kit + network printers)
-> wired connection to local Desktops including my wife's (HP) at the
other end of the house (18-20m).
The wireless connections to the other end of the house (25-30m) are
sometimes marginal (old brick walls!).
The super-hub would normally replace the Modem & wireless router but
looking at the forums the wireless performance is not very good and I
therefore have doubts on whether the super-hub wireless connection will
work properly (thus upsetting 11 year old grand-daughter who uses it
intensively).
I wonder whether the following configuration would work :
Super-Hub
- new wireless network (New-Net)
-> local Desktop (mine)
-> Netgear switch as above
-> connection (using existing Ethernet cable)
to Belkin router near my wife's computer
-> old wireless connection (HS-Net)
-> wife's HP
This would involve
a. having 2 wireless networks using same external connection
b. using an old (RJ45) Ethernet cable to connect Super-hub to Belkin router.
The alternative is not to use the super-hub's wireless at all.
If they can understand this has anyone any comments ?
