Traffic shaping - anybody knowledgable on this?
by Kevanf1
I have a question that has arisen out of a discussion on another
mailing list (fishing one). I first need to make it known that I do
not use peer to peer file sharing or newsgroups, no, honestly I really
don't and haven't for possibly over 5 or 6 years now.
So, I know it is possible to prioritise traffic at home via a router
(main one that carries the ISP signal). This is generally done by
setting certain ports higher values (if that is the right way of
describing it) so that they take priority over others. But, can an
ISP do the same for either individual customers or a blanket area or
even everybody? Further, can this (if it is possible) then be
countermanded by an individual customer?
I ask this because apparently Virgin Media customers find it
increasingly difficult to access any peer to peer functions or
newsgroups (Usenet) after 5pm due to traffic shaping on the part of
virgin Media. I am not a Virgin Media customer I'm with O2 but I
would like opinions on this one please :-) No, not on being an O2
cutomer either as I'm quite happy with them.

Problems with Alpine on Ubuntu 10.04
by Prithvi
Hi guys,
I was using Alpine, the text-based email client on Windows 7 for a while
and it was working very well. I was very happy as I didn't have to
use Outlook or Thunderbird, which really bog down my laptop.
Today, I decided to get rid of Windows for good, and installed Ubuntu 10.04,
installed and configured Alpine.
Shockingly, the experience has been nothing short of frustrating!
I keep getting a status message
'waited for x seconds for reply from server. still waiting...'
all the time, for all my mailboxes! I never had this issue on windows!
And, it asks me if I want to close the inbox (or connection), but doesn't
accept any input, and keeps trying to open my inbox again, till it gives
up and closes it by itself.
Has anyone else been using Alpine? Have any of you guys experienced this?

Nokia N900
by Adam Egan
Those of you who attend meets may remember me having an unhealthy obsession with Stephen Maddox's N900.
This also culminated in him writing an excellent review on the device.
Well guess who just got one!
I am super happy and just wanted to let everyone know haha.
On a serious note though, if anyone has any experience with maemo or anything and has some hints, tips or fun things to tru, then please let me know!

Hullo LUGgers!
We (Ubuntu UK Podcast & Linux Outlaws) have just announced that we'll
be holding another OggCamp this year. If you'd be so kind as to inform
your group members, we'd very much appreciate it.
OggCamp 11 will be held on the 13th & 14th August at Farnham Maltings
[0] in Surrey and it's free to attend. Details are on our website [1].
We have put the basics about the event up on the site, and will add
more information as we have it, including travel and accommodation
info.
As with last years event we'll have a few rooms available for people
to give talks about things that interest them. The event isn't
specifically about Free Software or indeed Linux, but it does lean
heavily in that direction. If you'd like to talk about something that
interests you, do come along, grab a slot and rock on.
We're actively looking for sponsors of the event, so if you know any
groups/companies who might be interested, do throw them our way.
Contact details on the site [1].
Although entrance is free we'd ask that people sign up at Eventbrite
so we can get an idea of numbers ahead of time. If you later find you
can't make it, do let us know so we can release the ticket.
We'll be announcing more details over the coming months on both Linux
Outlaws [3] and the Ubuntu UK Podcast [4], and of course we'll update
the main site [1] too.
Cheers,
Al.

Re: [Staffslug] Staffslug Digest, Vol 66, Issue 5
by I am Phate
Hi guys,
I'm Prithvi, and I live in Stafford. I'm studying at Staffs Uni, and would
like to gain more knowledge and skills on Linux, beyond the
download distribution-google for instructions-install steps! :)
This is my first email on the mailing list, and the first one ever on any
mailing list. I am a 'newbie' to the world of Linux. I've installed and
tried out quite a few flavors of Linux, but I still am a beginner.
I am interested in coming for the meet next week.
Is it OK if I don't get my laptop along? Probably just come along, get to
know you guys, and get the feel of things..
Pardon me if I break any rules, or don't follow protocol! :)
I will learn quickly!
Regards,
Prithvi

April Tech Meeting
by David Boucher
As Dave has said, at the next tech meeting we will be looking at
different types of installs. I think that we should work out beforehand
how we are going to do this.
This topic was Adam's suggestion originally, but my thinking on this is
that we each choose a distribution, install it on something (full
install, a VM or a live install, whichever you prefer) and bring it with
us. Then we each spend a few minutes talking about it, what we like
about it, what we don't like about it, maybe answer any questions that
come up, and then move onto the next person. At the end there should be
time for everyone to try the various distributions out.
Also, I think that we should each say what we are going to bring
beforehand so that we don't end up with duplicates.
What do you think?

Anyone got any experience with it? Recommend an alternative?

April Tech Meeting
by Dave R
Hello All,
Firstly, sorry for the delay in getting this email out, been a busy couple
of weeks!
Russ has very kindly offered to host a tech meeting on either the 11th or
the 18th.
For this meeting, we would be possibly looking at doing a few different
types of installs (not just Ubuntu!)
Anyway, if people could let me know what date most could make a.s.a.p please?
Thank you
Dave
