Ok so are you saying you cannot ping the router from a PC connected
to
it? (forget everything else for the minute) that points to two things
Nope, the router itself I can ping. It's any of the other 'devices' on the
LAN.
1. The router is misconfigured it should have its own IP address and
be set up in effect as a DHCP server.
Yes, it is.
2. A follow on from the above are you sure its releaseing IP
addresses? if the answer is yes you should be able to work that out by
connecting two machines to the router and checking the respective IP's
they should be something along the lines of 192.168.0.10 and say 11
Again, yes this I've checked. nad it does give proper internal IP
addresses. As you say 192.168.0.2 and up to around 192.168.0.256 if I
wanted that many devices attached to it :-) Standard, reserved (for
internal networks) IP addresses.
Now you have broadband I hope you do not have the router connected
to
that unless you have a fixed IP (Which I doubt) as your ISP will be
issuing an IP dynamically
Yes again, dynamic IP. It takes an hour to change with my ISP but
that's irrelevant in this case.
Do that, you dont need a firewall on the PC's the router is your firewall
Oh that I know, call it belt and braces :-)
Aha theres your problem I reckon your ISP's IP address is overiding the DHCP
Switch everything off, disconnect the phone line, restart router once
the 'Line light' goes solid then start the PC's
New one, I've not heard of that happening before but I will give it a go :-)
I take it the computers are set to get IP's from DHCP and not
staitically?
Yes, dynamic :-) I only set manual IP addresses a few years ago prior
to going broadband and when I had this lot on a plain old switch.
Let me know how you get on, alternativley bring the godam thing in
and
we'll check it over.
Okey dokey, will do. I may try D-Link too just to see what they say.
At least they might give me a hint as to what boxes should and should
not be ticked. It'll end up being a stupid setting somewhere that I
have missed no doubt...
