Can anybody give me any pointers on a long, long term problem. I have
a D-Link router/modem with 4 ports at the back (ethernet of course).
I have two PC's currently hooked up to this router (built in switch
too) as well as an X-Box 360 Live downstairs (not mine, my son's).
All have superb web access. but, no matter what I try or have tired
in the past, I cannot get the PC's to talk to each other. I have
tried Linux to Linux PC's and Windows to Windows PC's. I know it is a
setting in the router but I'm buggered if I know what. I did try
replacing the router with a switch just to see if the LAN worked then
(manually assigned IP addresses in that case). It worked a treat
then. But why will it not work with the router?
Any tips will be gratefully received :-)

You did mention earlier that it was going to be one of those days!
I too have a DLink router G604 WiFi and wired. I did set up a lan
using it a while back but i think it was with the laptops. I shall
search my memory cell (only one)
and my saved links. I'll get back if I find anything.

Stupid question but, are you using the router to set DHCP ? eg the
router is assigning IP addresses Mine at home is a Draytek Vigour 2600
that sets the IP for all my Linux and Windows boxes, it also acts as
my firewall, Laptops and PC's can all see/talk to one another.
Is your PC/Laptop set to assign address from DHCP eg the router?

and Windows 2000, Win 2000 and Win 98, Win 2000 and Linux (various
flavours) and alos Linux and Linux. None will talk to each other but
they can all see the router and I can use the web interface via a
browser to admin it whatever PC I'm using.

the router in the admin section of the router. I have checked
firewall settings for each individual PC even going to the extent of
completely switching them off. It's crazy as like I said, if I
substitute the router for a plain switch and assing individual IP
addresses (manually) they talk to each other without a hitch.

Ok so are you saying you cannot ping the router from a PC connected to
it? (forget everything else for the minute) that points to two things
1. The router is misconfigured it should have its own IP address and
be set up in effect as a DHCP server.
2. A follow on from the above are you sure its releaseing IP
addresses? if the answer is yes you should be able to work that out by
connecting two machines to the router and checking the respective IP's
they should be something along the lines of 192.168.0.10 and say 11

that unless you have a fixed IP (Which I doubt) as your ISP will be
issuing an IP dynamically

Aha theres your problem I reckon your ISP's IP address is overiding the DHCP
Switch everything off, disconnect the phone line, restart router once
the 'Line light' goes solid then start the PC's
I take it the computers are set to get IP's from DHCP and not staitically?

we'll check it over.

addresses. As you say 192.168.0.2 and up to around 192.168.0.256 if I
wanted that many devices attached to it :-) Standard, reserved (for

Yes again, dynamic IP. It takes an hour to change with my ISP but
that's irrelevant in this case.

Yes, dynamic :-) I only set manual IP addresses a few years ago prior
to going broadband and when I had this lot on a plain old switch.

At least they might give me a hint as to what boxes should and should

I suggest you humour us and actually paste the output of "ipconfig /all" and
"route print" on windows and "ifconfig" and "netstat -r" on
Linux.
Whatever you might say about it being configured correctly, it doesn't hurt
to get a fresh set of eyeballs on it.
Also can you paste the result of a ping in either direction.

Ok, how do I copy the output of those commands? There doesn't seem to
be a way of doing it in Windows. Print screen doesn't do anything
either. However, bear in mind that I am as rusty on the command line
in Windows as I am with Linux.

strange reason I am getting GRUB error 17 for every single hard drive

I'll let you know as soon as I have a working OS on the other PC... I
just haven't had time to set it up yet. Add to that I cannot for the
life of me find my SuSE 10.2 disk :-(((( It's a full version not the
Open SuSE one.
