Hi guys - I have a 40GB HDD on my HP TC1100 slate PC and wanted to install Linux as as I'm sick of fiddling with Live CD's - I flit between 10 of them and never stick any of them out. I need to leave 15GB for Windows and wanted to divvy up the remaining 25GB. I have 512MB RAM so the swap is going to be 1024MB Would I be OK doing 15GB for the FAT32 shared partition, 1GB for swap, 4GB for /, 5GB for /home. I intend to put Gentoo on there to use and understand the (in) famous package manager which I've heard is top class. You don't have to have your '/home' as a separate partition. This may well prove far more flexable for you. Can the FAT32 partition actually be used for /home? and if so, would installing a new distro reformat that partition as part of the install process? Would my data be safe? I was thinking of FAT32 for the fact that all flavours of OS can read it. I know that the newer ones can handle NTFS with ease but I hadn't thought of using an ext2 or ext3 type as Vista has to be able to read/write transparently. Foolhardy indeed!! I'm only installing it so that I can use the all the super whizzy tablet features that I don't think are running under Linux yet. Cancel or Allow. I have also been having no end of problems getting the various distros to get out onto the internet - seems to be a DNS issue which is complicated further by the fact - Cancel or Allow - that I'm using OpenDNS which is Linux friendly. It's an odd one. I've actually burned off Mandriva One 2007 to have a look at so I'm not 100% sure on the Gentoo yet. I know about it being an arse - Cancel or Allow - to use but i figured if i'm going to get my skills somewhere - it might as well not be an easy road! (I like challenges!) - I'll use EXT3 - Sold!!

Sort of a learner, more so than not - I've been a Mac user for years and a Windows user for even longer. Played with Linux and even went on a Red Hat course but have never used it as the OS of choice.
