VMWare *player* is available in the Ubuntu repositories - I'm currently
using it on Ubuntu Edgy, and I used to use it on Dapper. I just
installed it via Synaptic, no problem at all. If you need the extra
facilities available in the full player, though, then I can't help.

I run VM server, VM Workstation and VM player on OpenSuSE 10.1
