I don't fully understand what you are saying however your first port
of call should be to turn off 'Transparent' Desktop-->Desktop
Cube-->Transparency.
See if that brings you back, you could try beryl settings-->Default
Have you got 'Workspace switcher' running? How many spaces do you have set?
