I have just installed Beryl using the tutorial on the OpenSUSE wiki. Its
fantastic...anyhoo- i was messing with the transparent desktops cube, and
then suddenly another 4 desktops have appeared on my multiple desktop
manager on the start bar...I am not using Gnome.
So i was like, ok this is easy...just go to the manager and turn some of the
desktops off using the slider- wrong. It says there is only one desktop, and
there should be 4, not 1 or 8.
Any help and/or ideas would be very appreciated.

I don't fully understand what you are saying however your first port
of call should be to turn off 'Transparent' Desktop-->Desktop
Cube-->Transparency.
See if that brings you back, you could try beryl settings-->Default
Have you got 'Workspace switcher' running? How many spaces do you have set?

Search PCLinux forum Kris, there's an answer to that there. It's
something to do with the fact that "1" desktop is the default four.

Anyway, what i was saying, is that when i have Beryl and COmpiz running i
get 8 desktops, even though the system is set to one desktop..I shall move
it up to 4 before i run beryl-manager next time i reboot. Its probably just
an early bug.

That makes sense to me. You have a cube so therefore - not counting
the top and bottom of course - you should have 4 separate desktops as
standard. What's the point in having a cube (3D) desktop otherwise

Then either reboot or startx
Check to make sure you are using Beryl as the display manager and that
it is not defaulting to compiz. You may need to refresh the window
manager.
My Beryl 1.4 runs flawlessly on SuSE 10.2

Although, by solving one problem, i think i have created another...I deleted
the x config
knowing that Xorg -configure asks you the questions about the
config...well...
i got "roo" thats it.

Yay! All working now, thanks for the help Dick, i just copied the install
backup of the xorg.conf settings to the xorg.conf file....and it seems to be
working, i just have to deal with nvidia now :(
