I made no mention of installation although that begs another question
in respect of how does it install/run on a totally different hardware
setup if at all seeing as it was created on a specific machine the
idea being that you can get 'that specific machine' back up and
running from the disk?

Yes, as long it's set to autodetect hardware at boot it'll run live
or install on another machine. We only turn that off on an installed
OS so it boots faster.
Obviously hardware specific software such as wifi drivers won't work
on the second machine but that's same as doing any install from
scratch.
Also: Have you tried/ do you know how to run sbmanager on a usb
stick? My bios has a boot option "usb fdd" but I can't get it to see
sbm on the stick, maybe it's a question of format on the memory? I'm
stuck there.
