Does anybody use the ethernet over power lines system at home? I
think the brand was Devolo but there may be others? Anyway, it's the
way of setting up a home network by pugging the ethernet cable into a
special power socket plug, I'm sure you all know what I mean. I just
wondered if there are any restrictions on usage. by that I mean does
the network all have to be on the same breaker circuit (downstairs
sockets or upstairs sockets) or does it use the earth wire?
Hi Kevan
I have used these in the early days - by gum they were hot running
then, but the wifi wasn't able to reach my 2nd floor.
Here's some information you may find useful:
The HomePlug alliance are a group of established companies who all
adhere to the relevant IEEE standard for the technology...

The security is currently by encryption because of the wiring nature
of powerline. Although I have never had problems with interference -
it is likely that this is because of the years I used it (2004-2007) -
there weren't even many wireless networks in the neighbourhood then!
Data has been known to travel past the circuit breaker:

They were excellent when I used them (I can only assume by the speed
that it was a very early version) and I gained a level 8mpbs on my
11mbps kit (2nd floor to the extension in the garden).
I think they are known to overheat and die if left on, but mine lasted
3 years before then - which I think is pretty good considering they
were always on. First sign they're dying is major packet loss. I'd use
them again if I couldn't run a cable.
hope this helps
