Jees there was so much text there I couldn't think straight.
1. Try and use a distro thats ext3 suse has dropped reisers in favour
of ext3 because of problems I've had problems with LVM and contrary to
popular belief its a bitch to fix.
2. Not sure why you want 1GB for swap I doubt it will all be used
500MB is ample in my experience.
3. Separate /home is good practice as well especially when it comes to
upgrades etc.
4. As has already been said most up to date Linux distro's will read FAT or NTFS
5. Um what else? dunno getting dizzy scrolling up and down.
6. As has been said Gentoo is a bit of a bitch but I'm lead to believe
rewarding.
7. Personal recommendation: opensuse (Which will set up the config you
want automatically e.g. separate /home) or CentOS or Fedora
Thats because I know nothing about .deb so I'm safe in righteous land of RPM
Finally (with my Victor Meldrew hat on) trim the posts, don't top post
or you'll be forced to buy something reeeeaaaallly expensive. ;-)
