When I tried to play an MP3 on Ubuntu, it offered to find a codec. I
clicked a button, it installed the codecs, and my MP3 played. I seem
to recall Windows media player doing something similar years ago when
I tried to play something it didn't understand.
Or, in my experience Windows couldn't find the codec to play back the
media :-) It was some time ago but I was mightily annoyed. Sadly I
don't think I tried it on a Linux box, sorry.
