my drives must have been pulled from beige Macs :)

Which made me realise that I actually have two more Zip drives than I
thought... I have one in my old SuSE tin and one still in the box
awaiting fitting. Both are 250mb. The 750 is a firewire job that I
use with the little Sony Vaio.
Mmmmm, sorry for hijacking this thread but the mention of SCSI jogged
my memory. I don't suppose anybody has any 10 to 20 gb SCSI drives
knocking around? Perhaps after a server upgrade.... I could do with
5 to replace the 5 that I already have... they are only 4gb a piece.

has an IDE fitting and fits into a 3.5" bay.

why would i put windows on a machine i know that isn't going to run..
but equally if you put a laden gui on linux and put it on a 700mhz
pc.. you're not going to get miracles either.. it all depends on what

Most of the desktops in our house are Pentium IIs. With 96MB
they do most of what we need them for. With 256MB GNOME, OOo
and Firefox are happy enough together.
The first time I tried KDE I had a 486 with 12MB RAM - now that
was a mistake. But stick with PWM or wm2 and you've no problem :-)
I'm very tempted to get my 486 laptops [1] working again now, but
the cost of a new battery and a bit of RAM is probably close
to that of getting a second-hand X21 :-/
Getting back on-topic: XUbuntu (or Debian, or Gentoo) will be fine
on such a machine-spec. (K)Ubuntu will be confortable on it if
you fill it with RAM :)

That is all true, you can get one of those old machines that have 6 ram
slots and then buy some slightly newer, faster and bigger ram and the
machine is perfect for linux...the CPU may only be a p3 866 but it will run
everything the normal web browser and E-Mailer will want to use...those old
machines had lots of ram slots because the ram was only available in small
quantities..like 64mb a stick...but i have some 512 sticks that will fit in
those slots and work fine...so its not always the CPU that it needs...its
the ram that it guzzles...

Ah, you do have to make sure the RAM is compatible with the mobo
though :-) You can't just stick in any old RAM of course. In fact,
older RAM is far more expensive - not to mention slower performance
wise - than new, modern RAM. Crazy situation but true. Sometimes
it's actually as cheap to scrap an old mobo and buy a new one together
with a new CPU and much cheaper RAM. I've been there, sadly :-(

Yes, it's great on an eight-way SPARC, but for most of us
366MHz will do the job - and thanks to OLPC it soon will do :-)

Archaic? I installed two operating systems from
floppy disk this week [1] - Zip is a great step forward
in storage technology. ;-)
Following this thread I've dug my drives up from the attic,
and I'm going to set them up on a couple of our old laptops.
I found a couple of Jaz drives in the attic too :-)
