I just thought I'd share this with you all. I have mentioned it on
Wolves LUG but there wasn't a response...typical they are probably all
on some bloody IM or IRC thing now :-(
Ok, for ages (as in a few years) I have been unable to coneect to the
web using a live CD or DVD. Any distro' it didn't matter they simply
wouldn't work. I wasn't bothered as I had my HD installs and they
were fine. A couple of days ago I decided to try the latest Mandriva
One 2009 disk. Nice distro' and quick for a live DVD. But wait, I
was amazed, nay gobsmacked!!!!! I could connect with no hassle, no
altering of configurations in the router, it just worked :-)
Why? I don't have a clue. The only things different are that I'm now
using O2 as my ISP (£7.50 a month for unlimited dowloads and 8mb speed
which is max for my exchange) and I have the router that they sent
(Thomson). So I'm happy. I just need to sort out a distro where I can
keep Firefox add ons and I can use a live DVD/CD all the time. It is
vital that I use a particular add on for my Freecycle stuff.

discs. Even Gentoo's minimal disc...
Or are you persisting with a wireless adapter?
Can you pull the lspci -v output for your NIC(s).

TH: I'm not sure why you need to use a live disc 24/7, or for freecycle
exclusively (can you elaborate?) but you may be interested in the
'Reconstructor' project, that provides a nice GUI/plugin model for
re-creating the Ubuntu live CDs to your own specifications.

instead of using the live cd all the time, why not install a distro to a usb drive. means
you can have all your add-ons+settings exactly how you want them from computer to
computer. several distro's now include this as an install option, fedora is one of
them.

Nope, this is purely a wired PC no wireless on it.
Can you pull the lspci -v output for your NIC(s).
I could and was prepared to do that until I found that this live
distro was working :-)

Ah, I should elaborate. I was actually apologising for being
hypocritical on the Wolves list. I have about 4 PCs in my workshop
that all run various Linux distros. This one in the house however
uses Win XP Pro. There are bits of software that my kids use that are
solely Windows stuff and I've never really been inclined to see if
they will work with WINE or Crossover. However, I've always wanted to
be able to use Linux on this PC so was forever trying the various live
CD/DVDs all to no avail. Everything else worked great just not web at
all. I can only assume it was something being blocked through my old
D-Link router.
The Freecycle bit is a plug in that has been written by a fellow
Freecycle moderator that cuts about 2 hours work down to 10 minutes
everyday. It runs a treat on Firefox in both Linux and Windows so
that isn't a problem. The problem is that I can't install it and its
preferences using a live disk. I like the thought of remastering an
Ubuntu live distro though.
Of course, I could always just dual boot :-)
More than anything I'm just plain amazed that I can use a live disk
properly now :-)

TH: I only asked for the lspci output as it's quite crucial in forming
an answer: if you were attempting to run with an obscure NIC then it may
explain why the module support in the kernel has been flakey until now.
And not all distros will ship non-free software with their standard
distributions, if it required a binary blob.

worked, with only Internet access failing, then it may well have been
some DHCP compatibility whilst assigning DNS servers.

Ethernet/IP level... Clarification needed. Though if the latter was
indeed your meaning, then refer to the above regarding modules/NIC support.

good idea. I've used such a feature with the latest puppy. if your computer
can boot from usb (you would have to check) then you could simply bung it on
there and be able to save settings.

Ok, quick answeres because my arm is very bloody sore.... I've pulled
a muscle and I feel like I'm carrying a lead weight about with me...
USB distro? I'd love to guys and I have tried many and even went as
far as buying a usb stick specially for it. Sadly my mobo is too old
to play that game. I've tried loads and none will boot and I have
tried every tweak and configuration that is out there. When I finally
get around to upgrading this old board then I may stand a chance :-)
I have run distro's on this PC using a different HD. They work
perfectly os it ain't the NIC. The installed version always workes
beautifully but the live version does not play. I seem to remember
one of them working as a LAN the once but no exterior access. DHCP
sounds likely..
Don't worry about it guys I shall try one of those old disks later and
let you know if it works with the new router. I'm pretty confident it
will :-)
However, as I've said, I'm seriously thinking of putting a 2nd HD in
and running the PC as a dual boot.

CD/DVD that boots and your changes get saved to a usb stick/sd-card I know
this is supported with puppy as I recall you could even get it to save the
changes to a cd-r via multi session burning.

Yep...that's why mentioned Puppy earlier on :-) However, does it save
changes to things like Firefox with regard to add ons? I bet it
doesn't.
I've sorted out a 20gb HD that I may instal a distro onto. I don't
need much space and I certainly don't need laods of different
programs. A text editor, a browser and then the base system should do
me so 20gb is going to be ample. When its gets done is another
matter....

It saves all the changes made from the read only media (cd/dvd) its more
like a save state if you have ever used a virtual machine.

New subject: unrecognised video mode 31b
i've just done a fresh install of my system (i had to repartition the hd) and got a
problem that i've fixed before but cant work out how i did it. even looked at the
thread i made on the forum before and can't see what i did to fix it.
getting the "unrecognised video mode 31b" when the system starts, all it means
is that i have to manually select the mode on startup which isnt ideal.
i think i added/changed a line in my xorg.conf to solve the problem last time, but i cant
see what it was, i've also checked my menu.lst to see if the video mode was specified
there and it is.

In menu.lst, change:

to

then run update-grub and reboot. This may break any fancy bootsplash that
Linux Mint has... YMMV.

New subject: unrecognised video mode 31b
what graphic mode would it then use?
is there another way that wouldn't interfere with the bootsplash? i'm not overly
concerned about that in particular but it does seem that it can be fixed without having to
mess with that.

i've just done a fresh install of my system (i had to repartition the hd) and got a
problem that i've fixed before but cant work out how i did it. even looked at the
thread i made on the forum before and can't see what i did to fix it.
getting the "unrecognised video mode 31b" when the system starts, all it means
is that i have to manually select the mode on startup which isnt ideal.
i think i added/changed a line in my xorg.conf to solve the problem last time, but i cant
see what it was, i've also checked my menu.lst to see if the video mode was specified
there and it is.

Probably a VGA mode, or lower.

New subject: trust work tablet 400
hey everyone
i just found one of these graphics tablets and would love to be able to use it. there are
no native linux drivers for it. it is apparently a rebranded Aiptek 8000U.
i found this page, but the information seems to be out-of-date.

so is there an easier way to install it, or should i just go through this page, its quite
confusing though and talks about adding kernel modules.

It may sound simple, but have you actually tried to use it with a recent
distribution? Rather than worrying before, try it and see first. You may
be surprised!
If you run Debian and/or Gentoo, I'm sure a kernel recompile may be
in-order, but the kernel modules described are probably loaded already
in Ubuntu (or some other 'ease of use' distro):

Also, Ubuntu 8.04 has the xserver-xorg-input-aiptek input driver in the
