I'd check Crucial - we upgraded our Dell from 64MB to 192MB with a
module from Crucial, very reasonably priced. As for distro, we run
XUbuntu on our laptop. It has a 400MHz Celeron, and was usable with
64MB, although it's much faster with 192MB.
XUbuntu is basically Ubuntu, but with XFCE for the desktop, which is
much lighter than GNOME or KDE. I like it, but I hate the file
manager, so I ended up installing another one (can't remember which,
but it looks a lot like Windows Explorer)
If you like Damn Small Linux, then a hard drive install of that is
probably a good idea. I've heard reports of it running well on a 486
with 16MB of RAM, so it should be fine on your new laptop.

Hi Russ. Crucial were my first port of call :-) They always are.
This time they couldn't help though, that's how specialised this RAM
is :-( It might turn out that the only way I can get any is to look
for a spares or repairs job.
DSL should indeed run in that small amount of memory. I've got it on
a USB stick at the moment and it boots very fast. I like the idea of
Xubuntu too. Have you heard of the other one? I at first thought it
was Xubuntu (Xfce desktop) apparently it's a different version???
Early days yet for it.
I've not forgotten about that DVD I just haven't had chance (or been
physically capable) to pop up and borrow it.... I will do....
