Hey guys im pretty new to this list and pretty new to linux in general I'm
currently using debian on my current setup. But because I recently had a
spending spree on ebay I now have a athlon64 and a new motherboard. What im
wondering is how much more difficult is setting up and using a 64bit version
of linux?

I use ubuntu's 64 bit server 7.10 alpha currently on a Sempron based machine
so all things are possible!
No differences in my limited experience to set up and use than 32 bit.

I have never had any difficulties, Its just a different kernel... But I
really don't bother, I just run the x86 versions...

there really isn't no difference in installation of linux it just uses
the 64bit version of the kernel and package binaries. The only thing
I noticed when I used 64bit Ubuntu a good few months back was the lack
of 64bit versions of Java, Flash and some Windows Codecs. I believe
Adobe have now released a 64bit Flash 9 version, I think there are a
few open-source alternative Java versions out there anyways that will
work instead of the offical Sun packages. Not sure whats happened on
the Codec front. I think it was only WMA/WMV playback that was
affected iirc. Other than that the whole process is exactly the same.
I would advise you stick to Debian/Ubuntu type Distrobutions though,
a) because support will be better (bigger userbase) b) Gentoo/LFS will
be a nightmare, and SuSe/Fedora might be a bit bitchy about RPM
dependacys and buggy in places.

Hi Jon and welcome to the list :-)
First of all I should say that I have not used a 64bit version of
Linux. That said it doesn't matter because both the 32 and 64 bit
versions are the same installation wise (as in actually doing the
install). The differences are simply in the various lines of code
that make up Linux. These lines are simply optimised to make use of a
64bit chip.
Now, the difficulty you may find is in your new motherboard. It may,
and fingers crossed it will, be a breeze and all functions and
facilities are supported in whatever flavour or distro you are going
to use. On the other hand there may be something on the board that
simply decides to not work to start with; this would 'possibly' happen
with either 32 or 64 bit versions. I say possibly because the 32 bit
version of your favoured distro may actually have the required
libraries etc that support that board; whereas the 64 may not have
cuaght up yet. You can always run a 32 bit version on it no problem
if this happens.
Give it a go and see what happens. If you do run into problems give
us all a shout and we'll no doubt suggest using a different distro :-)

say if you're used to Debian I'd stick to that. I've no experience of 64bit

Arch Linux is an independent i686-optimized community distribution for
intermediate and advanced Linux users. Utilising a Rolling Release System
packages are regularly updated and an ISO release is just a snapshot to the
stable packages at that time. So there's no need for a fresh install the
command 'pacman –Syu' upgrades the whole system.
