Hi all,
I'm currently looking at experimenting by grabbing a new hard drive
for my laptop(s).
I'm looking at an SSD at the moment for a big speed increase... unless
anybody else can suggest anything better?
For my desktop I am looking at a WD VelociRaptor... they look pretty cool.
Anybody got any input on this?

WD velociraptor drives aren't that much faster than every other drive
out there tbh. I'd use my money to set up some samsung F3's in raid 0.
That is pushing SSD speeds (with 2tb storage...). The F3 is pennies
now too, so you'd be getting an all round better solution than a
raptor/velociraptor drive imo...

Pushing 'SSD' transfer rates, maybe. Some SSDs anyway - depends how much
you fancy spending.
The random-request (read or write) speeds of SSDs, particularly with
recent Sandforce/Intel models, is an order of magnitude better than any
form of rotating rust.
Personally I agree with Andrew on the storage/speed/cost front; I don't
think I'd buy another 'Raptor now, although RPM increases do typically
come with improved random workload performances, they're nothing like
the SSD experience. If you can't afford SSD prices, stick with the
Samsung F3/WD Caviar Black level of disk(s). :)

The F3 uses higher density and less platters, iirc. (why it's so fast
in tests, some speculate....)
(2 platters in the 1TB instead of a typical 3 or 4)
My preference would be F3's, I definitely don't regret buying them!

I suspect that a RAID array of cheaper discs my be faster for desktop users
(mostly random reads). I can't see how a single drive, even at 10k RPM, can
beat reading off two/three/four 7200rpm discs simultaneously.

I use compact flash card in a caddy for my laptop mainly for battery life,
can't say it noticeably quicker but then it is a rubbish laptop :-(

Do CF cards typically have the same wear-levelling that a "proper" SSD
would? I didn't think so, although please do correct me.

Unlike many other types of memory card, CF cards do have wear levelling.
A CF card also has all the electronics needed to operate as a parallel
ATA disk, all that's needed is a simple adapter to connect it up. The
host machine sees a perfectly normal (though small) ATA disk, no special
tricks required.
I've used a few of these and they work quite well, and I've not had a
card "wear out" yet, though I tend to avoid putting swap partitions on
them. The limiting factor is capacity, but if you don't need much space
then it works fine.

Very good to know! I've got an IDE to CF adapter in-use myself, albeit
its working from a purely read-only environment at the minute, I may
consider it for SWMBO's laptop. :)
