would be great if we could get through to the students there now that there
are alternitive platforms to be working on other than the .net framework (I

Chris, my reply wasn't meant to offend, but as you can imagine it
appears unsolicited when sent by a new member. Perhaps someone in the
IRC channel should have offered to post on your behalf, nevertheless
it's not important and I understand your situation.
I am studying Software Engineering at Stafford and have also come
across these problems, most recently when programming in C with MS VS
C++ - an awful choice but we were required to submit a project file as
part of the assignment. I have raised the issue and it appears to fall
upon deaf ears. It seems Microsoft certainly does have its needle in
the University's vein, I wouldn't mind if the options were available
to work with multiple environments.
Unfortunately though I don't have any interest in Joomla at present,
good luck with your group.
