Kids, they just don't get it do they?
My son has just treated himself to a brand spanking new 80gb iPod.
Lovely bit of kit I will admit. He comes to load iTunes on the PC. I
am not allowed to run Linux on this one, I got massively outvoted.
So, he downloads the latest version.....DING! First problem arises.
The latest version of iTunes will not run on Win 2000 only XP and
above. Ok, try one of the repositories with an older version.
Downloads an older version that is compatible with Win 2000....DING!
Second problem. This iPod is so new that it will only work with the
latest version of iTunes. Of course I have told him that there is a
very strong possibility that he would be able to sync the iPod with
Linux (probably Kubuntu or Ubuntu). Will he listen? Guess?
So it looks like I am now going to have to put bloody XP on a machine
now. I hate XP :-((((
Bloody proprietary software...mutter, mutter!!!!

Dont bother. There are some people that have been suffering from the same
issues, and i beleive they have released an oppen source driver for the
ipod, that allows it to sync with windows media player. But I don't know why
he is so reluctant to switch to linux, we all know what the Mac OS is based
on....

I don't know if that's any use, but winamp is one of the nicest media

Sorry I couldn't find anything for linking up an iPod with Winamp.
There just seems to be a couple of visual plug ins and that's your lot
:-( I'll do some searching, there must be something somewhere....
ps. I used to use Winamp when it first came out :-) The only reason I
don't now is because I rarely listen to music these days...

It don't end there either I'm afraid. Try telling iTunes that the music is
stored on another drive rather than C: and it works fine, get an iTunes
update and 'Bingo' it defaults back to C: so that when you sync you get an
error message "Sync failure 100+ items not found".
After re-ripping my 200+ CD collection twice, scratching my head as to why
suddenly my 40GB C: drive was full I then figured out what was going on and
spent a really really boring day deleting, re-assigning drives, re-ripping
and finally syncing.
Mine refuses to sync my contacts or calendar from Outlook even though it
says its done it, oh and makes Outlook fire up when closed.
Having said all of that when it works I'm happy to admit its pretty
impressive, adding a new CD is pretty painless and quick. I usually open
iTunes 1st, pop the CD in which iTunes detects and imports. I wait for that
to finish, take the disc out plug in my iPod and hey presto its done.
I've even got some credit with the iTunes store (Which for me was a pain in
the arse to set up) So if an old fart like me can do it........

intermediate and advanced Linux users. Utilising a Rolling Release System
packages are regularly updated and an ISO release is just a snapshot to the
stable packages at that time. So there's no need for a fresh install the
command 'pacman –Syu' upgrades the whole system.

I think you can download the code somewhere...but it seems to be written on
a papyrus sheet.

iTunes is just ultimate fail tbh. It refuses to to import my 200GB+
music collection. Winamp does it fine, and so does Amarok.

Next question..... I can't answer the first sorry :-( that's kids for
you. It's like the other week when I kept insisting his brakes needed
looking at on his car. He finally admitted that they may need sorting
when he bumped into the back of another car. So I ended up not only
buying new pads but also having to fix a nasty crushed front wing :-(

my workshop and I might just try persuading Chris' to hook his iPod up
to that.
As a matter of interest, where is the X.org config file held in
Kubuntu? I did know but I've forgotten and I can't find my notes book
at the moment :-(
