Hi, hope you had a good easter. I've just noticed that my Mandriva distro
has an ancient version of Firefox. I have downloaded the current version and
it is now sitting in my desktop. It's not an rpm package (I don't think) how
do I install it? The instructions say 'Extract the tarball in the directory
where you want to install firefox: tar -xsvf firefox-1.5.0.2.tar.gz'
This will create a firefox subdirectory of that directory.

it's a tarball gzipped source file, there aren't any mandriva rpms on
rpmfind, i don't know much about mandrake other than it has it's own
updater, perhaps you can try that - i hear it's similar to apt

for firefox but here's how you'd do it
firefox sources
download
http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-1.5&os=linux&lang=en-US
tar zxf filename.tar.gz (filename you just got in directory it downloaded
to)
run
./configure && make && make install
(all at once in the same directory you downloaded to) it should just install
itself then.. go make coffee!

I'm going to keep my fingers crossed. Mozilla do state that the
directory that the source is in is the one it install into. It does
not install into a previously specified one. I know that from past
experience. Unless they have changed things?

nah, the thing is make install puts the binaries in the right places to run
from a kde menu, /bin /sbin etc.. that's it's purpose - so regardless of
whether you make it in /tmp /dev/null or /home it should install right
