Desperate plea for help :-)))

Well, it's not actually 'desperate' but I really need some help with this. I'm on the cadge... I was trying to to access a disk in my 750mb Iomega Zip drive. It's knackered :-( the drive light will flash for a split second and then do nothing. So, does anybody possibly have a 750mb USB Iomega Zip drive that is no longer used? Possibly one that is tucked away in a cupboard at work? I can pay for it but not a lot. Experiments With DVD+RW

Hi Guys: I discovered the disadvantage of putting an Ext2 File System on DVD+RW: FreeBSD and NetBSD can't mount it, even though they're fine with Ext2 on a Hard Disk partition. Also alas, the Website of Robert Derman, http://www.dermancomputer.com, seems to have vanished, along with his useful free E-Book: "You Can Build Your Own Computer". File System Ext2 On DVD+RW

Hi: Recently I noticed Sun Solaris used CDs with a UFS File System. So I decided to try UFS and Ext2 on Optical Disks. It should work on CD-RW, but I had spare DVD+RW disks, so I decided to get more ambitious. Note that DVDs use 2048-byte Sectors like CDs, but they're handled in Error-Correcting Blocks of 16. You can't expect DVD-RW to work, because DVD-RW only writes complete ECC Blocks. But DVD+RW (like DVD-RAM) can update individual Sectors. FreeBSD UFS1 wouldn't work this way. The FreeBSD Handbook gives instructions for DVD-RAM, and obviously DVD-RAM has a different layout. But OpenSUSE Linux seems okay with Ext2 on DVD+RW. I copied a large Subtree and checked the result using diff -qr. Does anybody have thoughts about this idea? Like: Any disadvantages which haven't occurred to me? Obviously if you're recording Personal Information on Removable Media it might be preferable to use a format which isn't readable under Windows. Faictz Ce Que Vouldras: Frank Mitchell

Hi Frank, It's an interesting post to read on a Sunday afternoon. I'm quite interested to see that this does indeed work, though I can't help but feel that it'smore a solution waiting for a problem. What advantage would ext2 bring over UDF? Of all the file systems one would use to 'hide' files from Windows users, I would personally place ext2 firmly at the bottom of the list (just above FAT) given that ext2 drivers are readily available (and perfectly stable) via an IFS driver for Windows. Still, I'd be interested to hear why UFS/ext2 would be a better choice over UDF. Live CD/DVD's

I just thought I'd share this with you all. I have mentioned it on Wolves LUG but there wasn't a response...typical they are probably all on some bloody IM or IRC thing now :-( Ok, for ages (as in a few years) I have been unable to coneect to the web using a live CD or DVD. Any distro' it didn't matter they simply wouldn't work. I wasn't bothered as I had my HD installs and they were fine. A couple of days ago I decided to try the latest Mandriva One 2009 disk. Nice distro' and quick for a live DVD. But wait, I was amazed, nay gobsmacked!!!!! I could connect with no hassle, no altering of configurations in the router, it just worked :-) Why? I don't have a clue. The only things different are that I'm now using O2 as my ISP (£7.50 a month for unlimited dowloads and 8mb speed which is max for my exchange) and I have the router that they sent (Thomson). So I'm happy. I just need to sort out a distro where I can keep Firefox add ons and I can use a live DVD/CD all the time.
