get one personally. Sounds interesting, and I like the thought of
novell getting back where they belong.. they were very much the
forefront before microsoft marketing swallowed them whole in the 90's.

I tried to install a driver patch on Mandriva. The first time I got so many
errors and Kde crashed repeatedly that I did a complete re-install. Trying
again I got an error message saying that a suitable c compiler could not be
found. What's going on? Any suggestions please. The device in question is a
usb modem for talktalk broadband. eagle-usb.

Off the top of my head.... is it a new patch? Could it be a bad
download or possibly a bad patch? Have you run a Google check with
your search parameters in case anybody else is/has had the same sort
of problems?
Failing that I imagine you would need to check which c compiler the
patch is expecting to find. It may be different to what Mandriva
install as standard ro in a different path.

Ah, don't worry we've all been there. Ok, you'll need to have the
Mandriva disk(s) at hand. At this point I am unsure of exactly where
to go as it's been a while since I played with Mandriva. You will
need to be logged in either as su (super user) or root proper. su
gives you root privileges as a normal user but in a very confined way.
There's a big argument as to whether it is right or wrong to log inas
root ever but I'll not go into that now. I think you need to go into
the Mandriva 'control center'. You then need to go into tab that
allows you add or remove software. All of this can be done from a
terminal and it is a far more powerful way of doing things, not to say
quicker in most cases, but you need to know what you are doing and as
you are new to Linux I think it's best that you stick with the GUI for
now.
Right, installing gcc. Hopefully your software repository database
will show you gcc possibly in a developer field. You are going to
need to check gcc. This is very vague and I apologise for this but,
as I mentioned, I'm not familiar with Mandriva's layout. It will be a
simple matter of clicking a couple of buttons and I'm hoping it will
be fairly intuitive at this stage (fingers crossed). Look out for any
check boxes that say something like autocheck dependencies.
See how far you get with this. If it is not clear please say so and
I'll see if I have a drive with Mandriva on it still somewhere. If I
do I will run through the instructions step by step properly. Unless
somebody can help out here???
As I've typed all of that I have this thought foming that you should
in fact be able to install the software you have in this manner
anyway. This would be where that autocheck dependencies comes in as
it will automatically install gcc and any other dependencies. It
would not surprise me if after installing gcc it call for something
else....

In a console as 'su' I ran urpmi gcc (from a linux chat room!) Things got
better then- it ran through a lot of stuff then stopped. Telling me that
kernel sources were missing - error cannot find kernel sources i think. It's
a pain but the XP i'm using now is worse.

Ok, I thought this might happen as I hinted. It looks like it is
asking you to install the kernel sources. The make seems to need to
be able to access these. So, I would look at installing from the
CD/DVD set as I mentioned previously.

ok it seems that the sources aren't at /usr/src/linux try cd /usr/src/
and ls in there, if nothing is in there then you're going to have to
download ("update" i assume in mandrake's package manager) the source
for the most recent kernel. GCC is probable installed but a different
version than required, i've scan read these emails so forgive me if
i'm not paying great attention to detail - BT messed my lines up at
the beginning of the week and i've only *JUST* got them back. So i'll
make a more detailed input later.

i quite like KDE's konqueror - it's not dissimilar to firefox but it's

there will be alot of irrelevant updates you know, and your kernel
upgrade may conflict with your modem driver settings so you should do
that manually (manual configure at least)

Yes, multiple disasters. Having fiddled around in console with 'startadsl' I
then had to put all same info again into control centre network conns. It
then worked OK but a bit slow. I downloaded som updates from Mandriva,
compiler updates I think. I also downloaded AVG free and installed it-
though now I can't find AVG to turn it on! Next I disconnected and now it
won't reconnect. If I run startadsl I got message about dma then message
ioctrl. I just tried it again and it tells me eagle-usb driver not loaded! I
might sling it all in the bin and buy two tin cans and a piece of string.

Ha, ha....I think it's highly likely that we all have all been at that
stage at some point, Stuart. It does get better and very rewarding
with it. What you have to remember is that Linux is not Microsoft
Windows. You need to forget what you learned in Windows (Windwoes as
I sometimes comically term it) and learn computing the correct way.
That isn't a joke.
Once you mastered Linux you can give the BSD distros a try or Belenix
(open Solaris from Sun Microsystems).

ioctrl means that the device cannot be controlled, possibly because of
an update being incompatible.. this is why i like portage masking!
collisions don't happen if you tell them not to, paste some logs and
we'll take a look

This morning a complete format and re-install. Installed gcc and
kernel source and then the driver patch for my modem. It works, using
it now. Must have been last nights compiler updates that blew it
although today i've left it connected. Have to see what happens when
disconnect. Haven't downloaded AVG again but need to look at AV
software i suppose- any suggestions? Been running all day without
crashing so already beaten my XP record. What was Button doing?
Ferrari?? Alonso deserved to walk away with that one.

One day I would a love a boat. Not a yacht, I don't think I could
mangae with my arthritis. I'd love a nice 20 foot fishing boat. 20
or 30 hp inboard with a spare outboard just in case. It must have a

Boats are great fun when the weather is good. I'll look out a photo to mail
you in a minute.
My mandriva a problem still. Yesterday havingdone a complete reinstall
followed by all the usb modem driver stuff it worked all day, I even
diconnected and reconnected using the icon on screen- no problem. This
morning I booted the PC and no good again. It tells me that the PPPo
interface is down and the sync light is off on the modem (not all the time!)
I'm using it now with the other PC (XP) so I know the line is OK. When I
installed the modem driver patch I saw, as the script flashed past, a line
saying something about dependencies or rather the lack of them. I'm lost
here and pretty fed up with not understanding this stuff. Maybe I should
dump the Mandriva and try something else, perhaps one that others in this
group use?

Actually, that could well work for you. Quite often one distro will
work perfectly with all the hardware while another is useless. That
useless one could be a godsend to another user..
Whereabouts are you Stuart? I've got loads of different distro's
here, nearly all up to date. SuSE 10, latest
Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Slackware/Fedora 5 even the latest Gentoo. I can
easily let you either borrow them or do you a copy.

if i were you i would give kubuntu a whirl, it's KDE interface will be
familiar to windows - yet remain as individual as linux need be, also ubuntu
platform is debian and stable, it's basically like a desktop debian which
isn't that hard for beginners..

Thanks, a brilliant idea. I've loads of hard drive space so can look at
other distros. I got it on line again today but theres some problem with the
modem driver. I have to run eaglestat which then tells me to use -d command.
The modem then comes on but I have to reset the conn settings all the time.
Don't know what's going on. I seem to do a lot of hit and miss
experimenting. How to I find logs and mail them to you? Maybe you can throw
some light on it.

a dmesg output might also explain why it's not staying up.. type (as root)
dmesg > ~/dmesg.log and then it'll save to /root/dmesg.log

hold of an ethernet modem or modem router. Sometimes hardware is just
pants in Linux. Not the fault of Linux but the hardware manufacturers
don't write 'driver's for Linux (some do). It's left to the community
to write drivers and it is like working in the dark if the spec's are
not known. Besides which, an ethernet router/modem would be faster
than a USB one as the USB ones take some CPU time from your main
processor. This speed increase can sometimes be phenomenal.

personally i prefer using ethernet devices, i'd have used an adsl router
because basically 2 lines and it's up! usb in linux is tricky (and under
documented i feel), sometimes the bus doesn't detach a device right or
assign it right and finding why that has happened makes you want to break
the desk over your head, common with wireless usb adapters and usb sticks
(mine thought it was still attached for over 24 hours after i'd taken it out
it was still mounted!) I think the main issue with adsl modems for usb is
that they are designed to run pretty on windows, all well and good until the
device gives you grief in linux.. when you could end up rather stumped, i
know a few people in the same situation where no configuration will appear
to work because the hardware for no incompatability reason... just dislikes
the way it's handled

i had set it up to auto unmount but it didn't seem to want to.. right now i
have a dedicated server which seems to swap memory to a stupid extent.. only
recently though and cpanel keeps emailing me to tell me the cron commands
can't be forked! oh the joys of administration

OK still on list by popular demand. My daft questions always entertaining!
This eve I booted up and network down on PPP0 Open console startadsl -modem
not operational. eaglestat then tells me to run eaglectrl -d. Modem lights
up and syncs. Connected. Whilst reading these mails it dropped the conn but
reconnected while i was looking at network monitor page. This may be
separate prob cos the other PC does this occasionally.
Tell me when you've had enough of this!!

packets just check your "ifconfig -a" to see if there are a certain number
more errors there than before, if a pattern occurs it's more likely to be a
software bug, if there is no pattern then i'd assume it's a manufacturer
hardware defect, and no.. questions are why we have the lists

command is pretty much pointless in analysing the fault.. why did the
machine crash? there are certain debugging tools you can run if you know
what command caused the issue.. or application, tools include gdb and
strace, and when submitting bug reports to developers are always helpful to

Seems to have settled down now and works reliably but every time I boot I
have to do the eaglectrl -d thing to get the modem to connect.

Stuart. Seriously consider getting a decent ethernet modem or better
still a modem/router/firewall and switch all in one. It will save a
lot of hassle, honestly. If you need any recommendations I'm sure we
can all give them :-)
I got mine off eBay, by the way. It cost me all of £20 and it was
practically brand new. It's a D-Link wired model (many people are
selling off wired kit and getting wireless so there are some good
bargains to be found).

Yes, I'm sure you're right. I have a wireless router but no modem so I'll
have look and see what's available. I feel that it's worth persevering as
there are many good features, even in my limited experience, of this Linux
OS.

you could buy an adsl router and link the wireless to it as a wireless
access point.. all you'd have to do is set the wired router (with adsl
modem) as "master" for dns, gateway etc

disregarding everything down to ifconfig, ifconfig shows the status of all
wired adapters which are active.. as far as i remember your usb modem was
allocated eth0? (are there any other network cards not being recognized?)
