Yet another obligatory end of annual term e-mail
by Steven Maddox
Morning! (well it was evening when I wrote this, but forgot to hit
send... ah well)
You'll see another another e-mail from me on the mailing list sent
shortly before/after this one... but with my non-profit admin hat on...
basically just saying that the annual term (which runs 2nd March to 2nd
March each year) for StaffsLUG leadership is coming to an end.
This is therefore just a quick email from your current LUGMaster (which
is also me) to say thanks for nominating me last year and allowing me to
guide the LUG so far in its 24th year... it's been great to get back to
some meetings... even if it's been complicated by the issues with the room.
As you know the volunteers at Function Office (including myself) have
been working hard to re-launch the 'Community Computer Lab' that the LUG
used for its Workshop meetings, and hopefully there will be news on this
soon.
I hope with this, and the leaflets, and the new friends were making
within other groups... we can hopefully (once again) restore a great
atmosphere going forwards.
That said... I don't mind if someone wants to take over on the role of
LUGMaster from me (I never mind that idea!). Particularly as I am doing
a million other things too elsewhere and I'm REALLY not that charismatic
a person!
But I guess whilst things are a bit in limbo, it's fine if perhaps you
might consider such a role next year when things are a bit more
organised. I will of course not object if people re-nominate me for
this role again... just as long as you don't expect too much! Naturally
all the help you can give me would be great too.
p.s. Thank you to everyone that has contributed ideas and support in the
last year.

Leadership for 2024/2025
by Steven Maddox
Hi,
As in previous years, this is my customary e-mail where I remind people
that we're coming to the end of another annual term of StaffsLUG (which
runs from 2nd March to 2nd March). So as such, it's a great time to
speak up if you'd like to run, or help to run the LUG for the coming year.
This e-mail isn't an email from my personal e-mail address... instead
I'm acting on behalf of the non-profit that runs the StaffsLUG project.
You'll also get an email from the current LUGMaster (which happens to
also be me for this past year) summarising how things have gone so far
and if they'd like to carry on/step down... etc...
So that e-mail should be shortly before/after this one.
As is previous years, candidates for LUGMaster for the coming term need
to be nominated and then appointed...
Whomever gets the job can then appoint anyone else they've determined
might be able to help them ensure continued success of the project as
part of a committee. They'll have full use of Function Office (that's
the non-profit that runs the StaffsLUG project) resources such as
hosting, contacts, equipment, banking and supplier agreements (like the
use of any future CoCoLab room). They can also seek the help of any
other staff and volunteers from other sister projects to aid them in
their goals and serve on the committee too.
The nomination process is a 6 stage thing and whomever ends up LUGMaster
does so from the 2nd March 2024 until 2nd March 2025 (so the 25th year
of the LUG).
- Stage 1: Everyone is encouraged to send nominations by e-mail to
info(a)functionoffice.org by no later than the end of the day of 20th
February (one week from today).
- Stage 2: If nominated by at least 3 people, that person will be asked
if they want the role, replies needed no later than the end of the day
27th February to be considered (one week later).
- Stage 3: Nominations will be published on the 28th February and any
objections to them need to be received by no later than the end of the
day of 1st March 2022 and sent to info(a)functionoffice.org only.
- Stage 4: Nominees may be asked questions such as any relevant
experience or other supporting credentials to help us make a decision.
- Stage 5: Function Office staff agree on a new project leader which
will be announced on or near the 2nd March.
- Stage 6: Internally within the LUG, the project leader can then title
themselves however they like (although customarily it's always been
LUGMaster) and can create new roles for whomever they like to assist
them internally as part of a committee.
Hope this all makes sense,
Since this is a Function Office process, please make sure all questions
surrounding this are sent directly to info(a)functionoffice.org only.
Thanks

FSFE Potteries is celebrating I Love Free Software Day 2024
by Steven Maddox
Hello everyone!
I'm relaying a message from FSFE Potteries as they'll be celebrating I
Love Free Software Day on Tuesday 13th February
<https://wiki.fsfe.org/LocalGroups/Potteries/Calendar> (which is better
as it avoids Valentines Day this year!).
Since the CoCoLab venue is currently relocating (they used that venue as
well as us), they've decided to host this event at the marvellous KPA
Clubhouse <https://wiki.fsfe.org/LocalGroups/Potteries/KPA%20Clubhouse>
which is the same place that we normally hold social meetings.
They'll have free hot food and snacks (inc. vegan and gluten friendly),
soft drinks, and a few laptops running Trisquel GNU/Linux if you fancy
giving some Free Software a try! These will also be loaded with some
Free Software games too!
Everyone is welcome, so bring along your friends, significant other, or
family of all ages! Even if they've never heard of Free Software
before, it'll be a good way to introduce them to the topic.
If you reply to this e-mail to say you'll be coming then I'll relay it
back to them, alternatively subscribe to their mailing list here
<https://lists.fsfe.org/mailman/listinfo/potteries> and message them on
that, or e-mail them at potteries(a)fsfe.org.
You can find various FSFE Potteries information on their website
<https://fsfe.org/potteries>.
