Just a quick PSA...
Looks like Derby Computer Museum are after volunteers on Saturdays... if
anyone lives/goes to Derby on a regular basis :)
By the way we enjoyed our trip there the other month... will be sure to
do it again next year on another one of their evening events.

Ubuntu Crash.
by Geoff Whiles
Hello,
I am a user of Ubuntu and have been since the release of 12.04. I have
little understanding of the workings of Linux, though I have several
heavyweight tutorials and I'm not afraid to use the Terminal. I use Ubuntu
as a means to an end, in day to day home computing. Forgive the
terminology, but I am neither a geek or programmer.
The system has completely crashed. Attached are several pics. I won't
witter further, so as not to complicate my dilemma. I should add that I
also get many pubkey errors, and also whilst booting, the whole system
hangs and I have to hard break to shut down.
I hope that this message lands with someone who can dig me out of this
almighty hole or maybe refer me to someone who might be able to help. And
of course, I am happy to pay for any work undertaken.
Kind regards
Geoff Whiles

Windows-to-Linux at the Macclesfield Repair Cafe
by Richard Shute
Hi! I am writing to you as the nearest (active?) Linux User Group to where I live - Macclesfield - and on behalf of the Macclesfield Repair Cafe (MRC; https://www.repaircafe.org/en/cafe/macclesfield-repair-cafe/) to let you all know that we are actively considering offering a "service" - advice and consultation initially - on how people in our area can get off Windows 10 and onto linux (distro TBD, but probably Mint). This is a "global" (well certainly UK- and Europe-wide) initiative by the Repair Cafe community (https://www.repaircafe.org/en/linux-repair-cafe/; https://www.repaircafe.org/en/new-starter-kit-for-your-own-linux-repair-c...).
In Macclesfield, as I said, we want to start with an advice session to gauge interest and enthusiasm locally for moving off W-10 onto linux, but ultimately we may want to actually help people install linux instead of, or alongside Windows.
This where your group members could potentially really help, especially when it comes to supporting new users in their early days so as to make it an enjoyable and fraught-free experience.
To help us in our "end-of-10-move-to-linux" activities I have a few initial questions for you all (there may well be more later!) ...
- Is this an initiative you were aware of?
- Would this be something the LUG members might be interested or keen to get involved with?
- Do you know anyone closer to Macclesfield (i.e. East Cheshire not Staffordshire) who could help us?
- Would any of your members be prepared to offer some kind of longer term help (not a "support desk" exactly, but some hand-holding) IF we do decide to go further than just offering advice?
In the short term our plan is to hold the first "MRC W-10 EOL Advice Session" on December 13th at the Community Centre, Duke St. Macclesfield, SK11 6UR, starting about 10:00am, then, depending on interest and enthusiasm, offering the same advice session at future Repair Cafe's until we decide whether we are going to do anything a bit more hands-on.
Thanks in advance for your help on this, and any advice you may have.
Richard Shute
PS: I am a self-taught Linux Mint user (Cinnamon and Xfce) who got away from Windows about 10 years ago and have been enjoying life in linux-land ever since!

It's time for our annual FLÖRGÅSBORD event! (free bowling all evening!)
*For it's third year running...* we bring back "*Flörgåsbord*" !!!
Our annual tenpin bowling evening hosted by StaffsLUG. We welcome
everyone from similar local groups such as (but not limited to!)... ORG
Stoke, Potteries Hackspace, and FSFE Potteries to come along and join
us! Plus bring along any friends or family too!
This year it'll be on *Tuesday 9th December from 6:00pm onwards until
late (at most 10pm)***
*CLICK HERE FOR THE WEB PAGE WITH ALL THE VENUE DETAILS!
Stuff to know...
*It's FREE -* We're pickup up the bill for the bowling all evening!
*The place -* It's a private function room in the centre of
Newcastle-under-Lyme, that can hold up to 40 people and comes complete
with 4 full size ten pin bowling lanes. The room has plenty of
comfortable seating booths too, for people get a drink or eat food. This
room is located upstairs in the same building as the Vue cinema... and
you can find exact directions in the 'How to find us' section.
*All the games are free and unlimited! -* All 4 bowling lanes will be on
unlimited free play for the whole evening, 6 people at most to a lane.
*It's social! -* There are plenty of places to sit and just have a quiet
chat (no loud music if you don't want it!). Not everyone will be bowling
anyway... so don't feel like you have to.
*There is food and drinks -* The venue has a kitchen serving hot food
(including vegan and gluten free) as well as offering soft, hot, and
alcoholic drinks. Sweets are also available and kids get to drink squash
for free! We've put a copy of the details of the food and drink offered
by the venue at this link... click here
<https://wiki.fsfe.org/LocalGroups/Potteries/Lymelight%20Lanes?action=Atta...>
...and ordering is possible both at the concessions window and via a QR
code!
*Open to all in the LUG, ORG, PHS, FSF, and beyond! -* So a great mix of
people in one social... but you're also welcome to bring friends and
family too. The *only thing we ask is that you RSVP if you're coming* as
we need to be sure it'll be under 40 people. So don't worry if it
doesn't look like many are coming, as this has gone out to other groups too.
*It's a veritable Flörgåsbord!* *-* Forgive the silly name! It comes
from trying to merge many acronyms together and instead "Florg" kind of
got us thinking about Free/Libre orgs... which then turned into
Flörgåsbord... kind of like Smörgåsbord (a Swedish buffet)... so
basically people from lots of different local technology groups!.
*It's a Christmas thing! -* We won't plague the whole evening with
Christmas music or anything! But it's our way of saying thanks and
getting together at the end of the year.
*Travel* - Regular buses to the towns bus station then just a short walk
down Hassell Street. Taxi rank on adjacent Hassell Street. Lymelight
Boulevard multi-story parking is 1 Hour £1.50, 2 Hours £2.60, 3 Hours
£3.70, 4 Hours £4.80, and 24 Hours £5.70. Council ran car parks are
available in the town (see here <https://hopto.link/nulcarparks>).
Nearby off-street council car parks offer £1 for all evening.
*Please only RSVP (you can just reply to this email... or instead email
info(a)staffslug.org.uk) to say you are coming... if you're REALLY
intending on coming... as we want an accurate count of numbers.*
