I agree that separate services is horrible, but getting a relay between all three working
has to be the best option. That allows people to use the service they prefer, this
lowering the barrier to join.
Personally I prefer Discord on my phone, and XMPP on my laptop. I would love to be able to
follow the same conversations on both.

The same approach is being used with the mailing lists as that can now
be access via web forum (HyperKitty) and shortly there will also be
NNTP
access too.
So essentially IRC and Mailing Lists are still the main basis of both
instant chat and posting-like chat, it's just that each of them will
have 2 additional ways of accessing them for convenience.
Me personally I'll be sticking with IRC as I'm not really a fan of
Discord (but others are) and probably NNTP when that is up and
running.
