Little update...
Switches are all in place under the desks now and we should be able put
all the new network cables to them soon enough.
Small snag with the new gigabit cards though... it seems they don't have
a boot rom on them!
However from what I can gather I can load iPXE (built for the newer
gigabit cards) into the onboard boot rom (which is actually inside the
BIOS which came with the PC) and it *should* work to boot the new card
(rather than boot via the onboard NIC).
So far I've managed to edit the bios of PC 4 and it kinda works, in the
sense that I get green iPXE text (but on top of the Compaq bios logo,
not at the time of booting something - seems odd). But it doesn't seem
to play well yet, as the actual boot rom option has gone in the boot
order preferences. I have a backup of the original BIOS, don't worry :)
Anyway I've spent enough of my Sunday here (something I've been doing a
lot of to get things ready again, in our upgraded room)... and if anyone
out there has knowledge of iPXE, boot roms, network booting, or editing
AMI bios's... speak up :)
