I like the 90's :)
The celebratory logo idea was Dave's... and it's not exactly harming
you.  Also if anyone can/should pass judgement as to whether this
is/isn't a continuation or not (I don't care how it's viewed - either
way) then I'd say he has that say more than I... as he co-founded the
LUG 20 years ago :)
I'm up for a chat on use of logo's... but show me an actual law.  My
guess (not a solicitor)... is it's fair use especially as it isn't being
used for commercial gain.
I got all the logos from Wikipedia (an excellent source of vector's by
the way!)...
<sarcasm> Wikipedia must be just *drowning* in all that legal debt from
all their logo misuse! </sarcasm>

At work at the moment, So I'll be brief. Might want to check with
the
owner of any logo's you use I know for a fact some of those you have
included here and others on the site (the red hat fedora as an
example)  you need to get prior permission to use.
Also I really don't see the point in celebrating twenty years of their
being a lug when it's only just "relaunched" after being mothballed
for a good few years. We're in October now as well and I think
projects such as finishing off the LUG website and getting rid of that
awful 90's under construction sign would be a better use of function
 office's time.

     Lo,
So for the past few weeks I've been chatting with Dave Roberts who
started the LUG back in 1999.  One idea he had was to commemorate the
last 20 years, possibly with some sort of logo made by a graphic
     designer
in the LUG (if we have any)... in particular an idea for our
     Tux/Knot logo
atop a pair of Roman numeral X's.
I did briefly mentioned this idea at the last meeting, but no idea if
anyone heard me (as it was towards the end as we were taking
     pictures).
So I've had a quick go at making something in any case... the PNG
     should
open fine in anything but the SVG isn't quite websafe yet - so if
     you want
to open that, use Inkscape which is what it was created in.
Feedback would be great, or even alternatives?
Will give it about a week and then use whatever we've got on the
right-hand side panel of the website... not much of 2019 left now
     anyway
     to celebrate 20 years!
